Kia Sonet Achieves 4.5 Lakh Unit Sales Milestones In India: All Details Here
Since its introduction to the market on September 18 four years ago, Kia India's compact SUV, the Sonet, has achieved significant sales milestones, amassing a total of 4,49,812 units in both domestic and export markets by the end of August In India alone, dealers received 3,57,743 units. Additionally, the Sonet found international markets welcoming, with 92,069 units shipped overseas.
The Sonet has significantly contributed to Kia India's portfolio, accounting for 37% of the company's sales. This figure underscores the compact SUV's vital role in Kia's strategy to dominate the utility vehicle segment in India. Notably, the Sonet, along with the Seltos midsize SUV and the Carens MPV, has propelled Kia to the fifth position in the country's utility vehicle market, boasting a market share of 9.40%.

Sonet's Impressive Sales Trajectory
Looking at the domestic sales data, the Sonet's journey reflects a fluctuating yet consistently upward trend. Starting in the fiscal year 2021 with 63,717 units sold, a significant drop from previous periods, the model rebounded with 73,864 units in FY2022, marking a 15.92% increase.
The growth continued in FY2023 with 94,096 units sold, a 27.39% rise. Although FY2024 saw a slight decline of 13.5%, selling 81,384 units, FY2025 showcased a robust recovery, with 44,582 units sold in just the first five months, a 31.1% increase and accounting for 43.04% of Kia's total sales.
The Sonet's performance on the global stage is equally commendable. It leads Kia India's export chart, with significant demand in regions such as the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, Mexico, and the Asia Pacific. Its best export year was FY2024, with 30,574 units, marking a 5% year-on-year increase and surpassing the Seltos, previously the top export model.

However, the first five months of FY2024 saw a sharp decline in Sonet's exports, dropping by 75% to 5,210 units. This downturn reflects a broader trend, as Kia India's overall exports also fell by 62% during the same period. Despite these challenges, the Sonet maintains its position as a key player in Kia's portfolio, ranking 10th among the Top 20 utility vehicles.
Achievements Amid Challenges
The Sonet's success is remarkable, especially considering its launch during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Within less than a year, it reached the 1,00,000 unit sales milestone on September 14, 2021. Subsequent milestones included 1,50,000 units by June of the following year and 2,50,000 units by May 2023, approximately 33 months post-launch. The journey from 2,50,000 to 3,50,000 units took about 15 months, demonstrating the model's enduring popularity.
