Kia Introduces The World’s First Car Accessory Made From Recycled Plastic Sourced From The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Kia has introduced a new car accessory crafted from plastic collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by The Ocean Cleanup. This marks a significant step in Kia's collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup, aiming to reduce ocean plastic waste. The limited-edition trunk liner for the Kia EV3 will be available in select markets, aligning with the model's launch.

The partnership between Kia and The Ocean Cleanup began in 2022, focusing on transforming ocean plastic into practical products. Kia aims to increase recycled plastic use in its vehicles to over 20% by 2030. This initiative is part of Kia’s broader strategy to become a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.

Charles Ryu, Executive Vice President at Kia, stated: "This partnership is not only a testament to our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation, but a worldwide movement to create cleaner, healthier oceans for future generations." He emphasized the importance of creating a circular resource system for ocean plastic.

The trunk liner design reflects Kia's 'Opposites United' philosophy, featuring a 'geometric wave' pattern inspired by ocean waves and trash flow. Composed of 40% recycled ocean plastic, it maintains durability and functionality comparable to conventional liners. A QR code on each liner provides details about its development and the partnership.

Boyan Slat, Founder & CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, expressed gratitude towards Kia: "We are so grateful to have a visionary and passionate partner in Kia, who shares our vision of ensuring that the plastic we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is given a new life in sustainable items."

Challenges and Innovations

The process of converting ocean plastic into usable materials involves sorting, recycling, and processing to meet quality standards. Unlike other plastics, those extracted by The Ocean Cleanup require verification under the Chain of Custody Standard due to their unique properties. This ensures traceability and material integrity.

Kia has already integrated recycled materials into its models like the EV9 SUV and EV6. These vehicles use recycled fishnets for flooring and recycled bottles for seat fabrics. Such efforts underscore Kia’s commitment to sustainability.

Kia's Global Vision

Kia is committed to providing sustainable mobility solutions globally. With operations in over 190 markets and manufacturing facilities in six countries, Kia sells around three million vehicles annually. The company focuses on electrified vehicles and mobility services under its slogan ‘Movement that inspires’.

This initiative with The Ocean Cleanup highlights Kia's dedication to environmental responsibility while advancing its sustainability goals. By turning ocean waste into valuable products, Kia demonstrates how innovation can contribute positively to ecological preservation.
