Kia And The Ocean Cleanup Celebrate Over A Million Pounds Of Plastic Removed From The Ocean

Kia Corporation and The Ocean Cleanup have achieved a major milestone in their fight against ocean plastic pollution. Their partnership has led to the removal of over one million pounds of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). This collaboration aligns with Kia's goal of becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

The Ocean Cleanup's System 03 vessel recently returned to San Francisco, marking a significant achievement. Since their partnership began in 2022, Kia's support has been crucial in removing vast amounts of plastic from the GPGP, which spans an estimated 1.6 million square kilometers.

Kia & Ocean Cleanup's Ocean Victory

Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, emphasized the importance of partnerships: "The Ocean Cleanup is an international non-profit and our operations are reliant on our incredible partnerships. Our partnership with Kia is setting a new standard for how organizations can drive real change. Together, we’re proving that innovation and commitment can rid the oceans of plastic and inspire others to follow. The products born from this collaboration will symbolize our shared progress and the tangible impact of sustainable solutions."

In 2025, The Ocean Cleanup plans to launch a new initiative to map "hotspots" of plastic accumulation within the GPGP. This strategy aims to enhance the efficiency of future clean-up efforts by targeting areas with the highest concentrations of waste.

Charles Ryu, Senior Vice President at Kia Corporation, expressed pride in their collaboration: "All of us at Kia extend our warmest congratulations to The Ocean Cleanup team for its continued dedication and hard work as the only organization actively tackling plastic pollution in the GPGP. We are honored to be a key supporter of its ocean cleanup activities and look forward to an even more ambitious chapter of our partnership as System 03 and operations are improved to shorten the timeline for cleanup."

Technological Advancements and Goals

The Ocean Cleanup has set an ambitious timeline for cleaning up the GPGP. With recent technological improvements, they aim to halve the time needed for this task from ten years to five years. This accelerated timeline demonstrates their commitment to addressing oceanic plastic pollution swiftly.

Over two and a half years, Kia and The Ocean Cleanup have collaborated closely on various initiatives. In its first six years, The Ocean Cleanup conducted 23 operational trips and over 100 plastic extraction missions, removing more than a million pounds of trash from the GPGP.

Sustainable Product Development

Kia is also focusing on creating durable products from recycled ocean plastics. The first product from this initiative will be a car accessory for the Kia EV3, set to launch in Q4 this year. Additionally, Kia's latest models incorporate recycled materials; for instance, the EV9 uses recycled fishing nets in its interior carpet.

Kia aims to use 20 percent recycled plastics in its vehicles by 2030 as part of its broader vision for sustainable mobility. This includes integrating eco-friendly materials into various components across their vehicle lineup.

Kia Corporation is dedicated to providing sustainable mobility solutions globally. Founded in 1944, Kia employs 52,000 people worldwide and operates in over 190 markets. They sell around three million vehicles annually and are committed to popularizing electrified vehicles while developing innovative mobility services.

The collaboration between Kia and The Ocean Cleanup exemplifies how strategic partnerships can lead to significant environmental benefits. By combining resources and expertise, they are making substantial progress towards cleaner oceans.
