Kerala Motor Vehicle Dept Teams Up With Private Owners For Disaster Aid
The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) in Kerala is taking proactive steps to prepare for potential disasters like landslides. They are enlisting private vehicles to aid in rescue operations. The district disaster management authorities have tasked the enforcement wing of the MVD to compile a list of suitable vehicles.
These vehicles include earthmoving machines, cranes, vehicle-mounted generators, trucks, ambulances, off-road jeeps, potable water tankers, and construction sector trucks. JCBs, known for their ability to reach difficult areas, are also included. After registering the vehicles, owners will be contacted to confirm their availability for any emergency.
The verified list will then be forwarded to the disaster management authority cells in each district. If a vehicle is needed, the Disaster Management Authority will contact the owner directly. If there is no response, MVD officials will arrange it. The plan is to ready more than 10,000 vehicles across the state.
Focus on Ambulances in Kozhikode
Kozhikode district has already set up around 500 ambulances, recognising their critical need. Other districts have prepared lists of over 200 ambulances. Some districts, including Wayanad, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam, have fewer vehicles. Necessary vehicles will be sourced from neighbouring districts.
The initiative also includes listing drivers skilled in operating these vehicles, particularly off-road. Additionally, vehicles from educational institutions will be considered if people need to be relocated. This comprehensive plan aims to ensure readiness for any disaster scenario.
