Prime Minister Justin Trudeau To Serve As Honorary Chairman At 2024 Presidents Cup

Justin Trudeau, the current Prime Minister of Canada, has accepted the role of Honorary Chairman for the 2024 Presidents Cup. The event will take place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, from September 24-29th.

"Sending my best wishes to all the golfers – and especially our Canadian stars – participating in the Presidents Cup, this year in Montreal. With the Olympics, the Paralympics, and so many other tournaments, this summer has shown us all the power of sport to inspire and unite. I encourage Canadians to keep that cheer going with the Presidents Cup – let’s watch, celebrate, and enjoy a historic and incredible tournament," said Prime Minister Trudeau.

Prime Minister Trudeau joins a notable list of world leaders who have previously held this honorary position at the Presidents Cup. This list includes U.S. President Joe Biden (2022), Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison (2019), U.S. President Donald J. Trump (2017), South Korean President Park Geun-hye (2015), U.S. President Barack Obama (2013 and 2009), Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard (2011), Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper (2007), U.S. President George W. Bush (2005), South African President Thabo Mbeki (2003), U.S. President William Jefferson Clinton (2000), Australian Prime Minister John Howard (1998), U.S. President George H.W. Bush (1996) and U.S. President Gerald R. Ford (1994).

The Presidents Cup is a biennial global team competition between teams from the United States and an International team representing the rest of the world excluding Europe. The event alternates between venues in the U.S. and overseas.

Genesis Motors Canada will continue as the official automobile sponsor of the Presidents Cup until 2026. Their sponsorship includes not only The Presidents Cup but also extends to other prestigious golf events such as the Genesis Invitational and Genesis Scottish Open.

The Royal Montreal Golf Club will host The Presidents Cup for the first time in 17 years since it last hosted in 2007. It will become only the second international venue to host this event more than once, joining The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia which has hosted three times.

Leadership Roles at The Event

Canadian Mike Weir will lead as captain of the International Team when The Presidents Cup returns to Montreal. Jim Furyk will serve as captain for the U.S. Team.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his gratitude for Trudeau's involvement: "With the return of the Presidents Cup to Canada, we are honoured to have the support of Prime Minister Trudeau as our honorary chairman for the 2024 event." He added that having Trudeau enhances efforts to promote golf globally through spirited team matches.
