JSW MG Motor India Achieves 40% Sales Milestone With Electric Vehicles
JSW MG Motor India has achieved a milestone by becoming the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to derive 40% of its sales from electric vehicles (EVs). According to Satinder Bajwa, Chief Commercial Officer of JSW MG Motor India, the company's EV sales in June accounted for nearly 40% of its total monthly sales, an increase from 35% in May.
MG Motor's Repositioning Strategy
To enhance its EV growth in India, MG Motor has repositioned its ZS EV and Comet models. The ZS EV is now priced at INR 18.98 lakh ($25,300), while the Comet is available at INR 7.45 lakh ($9,900). This strategy has been effective, with the company selling approximately 900 units of the Comet last month compared to around 400 units six months ago.

The company has seen a significant rise in EV sales over the past six months, with a 50% increase. The Comet model, in particular, has experienced a notable boost due to a repositioning strategy focused on customer customization. The current EV lineup includes models such as the Hector, Gloster, ZS EV, and Comet.
Sales Performance Overview
MG Motor's sales performance for the first half of the financial year has shown mixed results. In January, the company sold 2,922 units, marking a 7.2% decline year-on-year (YoY). February and March saw positive growth in sales; however, April experienced a 10% YoY decline. May showed slight positive growth followed by a 9% decline in June.
Bajwa highlighted that "the company is not in a hurry to expand its product lineup and is focused on building volumes and putting the fundamentals in place before scaling up gradually." This approach reflects MG Motor's strategic focus on solidifying its market position before broadening its product range.
Future Plans and Expansion
MG Motor plans to introduce new products over the coming years to further bolster its EV portfolio. The first new product launch is expected in the third quarter of this financial year. Additionally, the company aims to enter both sedan and hatchback segments when deemed appropriate.

The company is also working on increasing consumer confidence across India. Currently operating with 400 touchpoints for sales and service, MG Motor intends to expand this network to 600 by year-end. Notably, they aim for 20% of additional sales to come from non-urban areas.
This strategic expansion underscores MG Motor's commitment to enhancing accessibility and service quality across diverse regions within India.
In summary, JSW MG Motor India's focus on electric vehicles has led to substantial growth within this segment. With strategic repositioning of key models and plans for future expansion into new vehicle segments and geographical areas, the company is poised for continued success in India's evolving automotive market.
