José Muñoz Acknowledged In 2024 TIME100 Climate List For Pioneering Electric Vehicle Leadership
José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor Company's president and global COO, has been acknowledged in the 2024 TIME100 Climate list. This recognition highlights his leadership in advancing Hyundai's electrification efforts. The list celebrates individuals making significant strides in climate action globally. Muñoz expressed pride in leading Hyundai's electric vehicle transition in the U.S., emphasizing the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Hyundai remains steadfast in its dedication to electrification, even as some competitors retreat from their commitments. The company holds about 10% of the U.S. electric vehicle market, trailing only Tesla. Hyundai's EVs have received numerous accolades, including "World Car of the Year" for two consecutive years. By 2030, Hyundai plans to offer 21 different EV models and aims to sell 2 million EVs annually worldwide.

The TIME100 Climate List recognises leaders across various categories such as Titans, Catalysts, Innovators, Leaders, and Defenders. Alongside Muñoz, notable figures like Bill Gates and Prince Harry are also featured for their contributions to climate action. TIME editors evaluated leaders based on measurable achievements rather than mere commitments.
Hyundai is investing $12.6 billion in Georgia to boost production of EVs and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in the U.S., addressing rising demand. The company is also expanding its hybrid model offerings from seven to 14 by introducing new hybrid models for Genesis. Additionally, Hyundai continues to invest in battery and hydrogen technology advancements.
Muñoz highlighted Hyundai's role in promoting a hydrogen economy and smart city development as part of its strategy towards carbon neutrality. He stated that automakers must be proactive in addressing climate change compared to other industries. "We have a responsibility to pass down breathable air, the beauty of nature, and a sustainable planet to future generations," he said.
Hyundai's Economic Impact
Hyundai Motor America contributes significantly to the U.S. economy through its extensive operations, including its North American headquarters in California and manufacturing facilities like the Alabama assembly plant and the upcoming Metaplant America in Georgia. These operations support Hyundai's Progress for Humanity vision while providing $20.1 billion annually and creating 190,000 jobs nationwide.
