Jeep Renegade To Be Launched In India – Electric 4X4, ADAS & More
Stellantis recently announced the development of a new-generation Jeep Renegade. This updated model is expected to hit the market in 2027, with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 187.5bhp, making it the most powerful compact SUV in India. The current news around Jeep also includes the next-gen Compass not being available in India.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares indicated that the upcoming Renegade will be built on a cost-competitive platform. Although he didn't specify, his statements suggest the possible use of Citroen's CMP platform. This platform, with its simple architecture, can be sourced globally, offering an efficient and economical solution for production.
Initially, the new-gen Renegade was expected to use the STLA Small platform. However, there is compelling evidence pointing towards the CMP platform for the upcoming model. This platform is already used by Citroen C3 in Europe. Sharing platforms and components will help both Jeep and Citroen reduce production costs.
For the new Renegade, the estimated starting price is around Rs 15 lakh. This competitive pricing is achievable thanks to the shared platform and components. The new Renegade will also feature an electric 4x4 option.
Since the CMP platform supports electric 4x4, it is the best option for introducing this feature without costly reengineering. Additionally, the Renegade's E/E architecture can be upgraded to support ADAS features.
These features will be relevant for both Indian and international markets. The common platform and components will help launch the new Renegade Electric model at an affordable price, estimated at around $25,000 (approx. Rs 20.84 lakh).
Regarding the powertrain, the new Renegade will not use the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine found in the Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross. Instead, it will likely feature the advanced EP6DT 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine.
This new powertrain is developed through a collaboration between PSA and BMW, this engine can deliver varied power outputs, with 148bhp and 177.5bhp options expected for the new Renegade.
Jeep can introduce the next-gen Renegade in India in 2027. However, Stellantis has not made any formal announcements. The company said that it will continue to focus on the Indian market. India is the only country outside the USA where Jeep locally produces and assembles its SUVs.
By utilising the CMP platform, the new Renegade will benefit from a cost-effective production process. This approach aligns with Jeep's strategy to provide a 4x4 option for each model. Furthermore, the CMP platform's support for electric 4x4 facilitates the integration of this feature into the new Renegade.
The decision to use the 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine ensures the Renegade remains competitive within its segment. The engine's potential for various power outputs offers flexibility, meeting diverse market needs. The new Renegade's starting price of Rs 15 lakh makes it an attractive option for Indian buyers.
