Jeep And Mopar Career Automotive Program Awards Scholarships To Native American Students
Two Native American students have been awarded scholarships through the Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP). These scholarships, valued at up to $20,000, cover tool reimbursements and two years of tuition for automotive service technician training. Carl Cuthair from San Juan College in New Mexico and Camron Slaton from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology were honoured by Mopar and Jeep representatives at separate events.
The scholarships are a collaboration between the Jeep brand, Mopar CAP, the Indigenous Cultural Opportunity Network (ICON), and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). AISES is dedicated to promoting STEM careers among Indigenous communities. Founded in 1977, AISES has been offering scholarships since 1981. The scholarship recipients were announced in May 2024.
The Jeep brand actively supports Stellantis employee resource groups like ICON. This partnership was crucial in securing funding for these scholarships. Bob Broderdorf, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America, stated, "Recognizing the diverse needs of our community, we are committed to supporting initiatives that provide scholarships for qualifying Native American students."
Bill Peffer, senior vice president of network development at Stellantis North America, highlighted the importance of these scholarships. He said, "For more than 40 years, the Mopar CAP program has been providing valuable training that gives our students a competitive edge and helps address the urgent need for qualified technicians in the market today."
Mopar CAP was established in 1984 to train students as automotive technicians upon graduating from certified two-year institutions. Currently, over 5,000 students are enrolled across various U.S. locations. More than 80% of Stellantis’ dealerships are within an hour's drive from a Mopar CAP school.
High school students interested in vehicle maintenance can pursue this career path without bearing four-year college costs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an annual demand for 67,700 auto service technicians through 2032 due to retirements or career changes.
Future Prospects for Scholarship Recipients
The scholarship recipients had to meet specific criteria: enrollment in the Mopar CAP program with a minimum GPA of 2.5, submission of a need-based letter and recommendation letters, and completion of an interview process. A third recipient will be announced later.
