Jeep & Citroen To Introduce Rapid Model Updates In India

Jeep and Citroen are set to introduce more frequent model updates in India compared to Europe. Jeep, currently struggling in the Indian market with its sales performance and model line-up, aims to revitalise its presence by regularly updating models like the Compass, Meridian, Wrangler, and Grand Cherokee.

In India, Jeep manufactures the Compass and Meridian, targeting mainstream buyers. Sales for these models have been low, with monthly averages of 280 units for the Compass and 175 units for the Meridian in FY2024. To boost sales and attract more customers, Jeep India will launch an updated Compass next month. Additionally, a refreshed Meridian is scheduled for release in October, just before Diwali.

Frequent Updates for Jeep Models

Shailesh Hazela, MD and CEO of Stellantis India, confirmed these developments. Stellantis, based in the Netherlands, owns 14 automotive brands including Jeep, Chrysler, Citroen, Fiat, and Maserati. "You will have [updated] models starting next month with Compass. We will have Meridian 2.0 in October," Hazela stated.

Hazela added that Jeep India plans to introduce frequent updates to its line-up to align with market preferences. "We have learned that the Indian market needs freshness frequently. Unlike the product action seen in 18-24 months in European markets, in India, we need to introduce freshness every six months."

Citroen's Strategy

Besides Jeep, Citroen will also receive regular updates to its range. The C3 Aircross was launched less than a year ago and has already received upgrades. Hazela assured that Stellantis would continue to bring upgrades and updates to its models to keep them relevant to changing market needs.

The company recently added an automatic transmission option to its C3 SUV and will soon announce its prices. While Citroen-branded models are popular due to their efficient engineering, they are often considered under-equipped in features and technology—a concern Hazela is keen on addressing.

The more frequent updates will be facilitated through Stellantis' local R&D network. The global auto giant is working on several interventions for existing models to compete effectively in India's highly competitive passenger vehicle market.

Updates for the Compass and Meridian will mainly be cosmetic. The brand had earlier teased a facelift for the Meridian and confirmed it would be launched this year.

Jeep's strategy includes leveraging local R&D resources for frequent product refreshes. This approach aims to keep their offerings fresh and appealing amidst stiff competition.

The focus on regular updates reflects a shift from the typical 18-24 month product cycle seen in European markets. In India, introducing new features or cosmetic changes every six months is crucial for maintaining consumer interest This strategy aligns with Stellantis' broader goal of ensuring their vehicles remain competitive by adapting quickly to market demands.
