James Deane Extends Lead With Victory At Formula DRIFT St Louis Round
James Deane secured his third victory of the season at the Formula DRIFT PRO Championship Round 5, held on July 20, 2024, at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, IL. This win extended his lead to 118 points over Aurimas Bakchis. Deane's performance in the AutoZone Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD was unmatched.Hiroya Minowa, a 14-year-old from Japan, finished second in his Enjuku Racing / Cusco / Jerry Yang Racing Toyota GT86. Minowa's impressive drive saw him leap from seventh to fourth in the championship standings. His skills have been honed through sim racing, and he now leads the FD PRO Rookie title chase.Fredric Aasbo claimed third place after losing to Minowa in the Final 4. Driving the Rockstar Energy Toyota Racing GR Supra, Aasbo is now 144 points behind Deane with three rounds left. Despite this setback, he closed in on Bakchis for second place.Matt Field finished fourth in his Borla Performance / GT Radial / Heat Wave / Leen / Drift Cave Corvette. Field defeated Chris Forsberg and Dylan Hughes before losing to Deane. This result moved him from eighth to sixth in the standings.Adam LZ faced a tough battle against Minowa in the Top 8. Their initial runs were too close to call, leading to an OMT (One More Time) run. Unfortunately, LZ's car collided with Minowa's during the final run, causing significant damage. LZ announced he wouldn't compete in the remaining rounds due to this incident.Ben Hobson finally qualified for the Top 32 but had a challenging heat against LZ. Despite promising moments, Hobson couldn't complete a drift and was eliminated after an OMT run. He currently sits at 36th overall.Aurimas Bakchis and Simen Olsen of Team Feal met in the Top 16 heats. Bakchis won but was later defeated by Aasbo in the Top 8. Bakchis is now fifth in the standings while Olsen remains in sixteenth place.
Manufacturer and Tire Standings
Toyota continues to lead the Auto Cup with 590 points, followed by Ford with 552 points. In the Tire Cup standings, Nitto leads with 806 points, ahead of GT Radial with 742 points.The next round of Formula DRIFT PRO will take place at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA on August 9-10.
