INEOS Grenadier Begins Test Phase 1,300m Underground In K+S Potash Mine
The INEOS Grenadier 4X4 has entered a new phase of testing, operating 1,300 metres underground at the K+S potash mine in Zielitz, central Germany. This trial aims to demonstrate the vehicle’s durability and performance in extreme conditions. The salt-rich environment of the mine presents significant challenges for any vehicle.
With around 45,000 tons of raw salt mined daily, the facility spans 61 square kilometres. The Grenadier is equipped with comprehensive corrosion protection, including electrocoating, wax sealing in cavities, and powder coating on the exterior. These features are designed to withstand the harsh conditions underground.
Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, stated, "Extreme testing conditions are not new to the Grenadier as we really put it through its paces during development, but it’s great to work with partners around the world to showcase just how capable this 4X4 is on-road, off-road and now underground."
INEOS has confidence in the Grenadier’s capabilities. During its development phase, the vehicle underwent over 1.1 million miles of testing. This included enduring temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius and altitudes exceeding 600 metres. The tests also covered challenging terrains such as the Schöckl mountain in Austria.
The INEOS Grenadier combines British design with German engineering precision. It features a full box-section ladder frame chassis and heavy-duty solid beam axles. The vehicle is also equipped with a two-speed transfer case and up to three locking differentials.
Powering the Grenadier is a BMW 3.0-litre turbo-charged inline six-cylinder engine, available in both petrol and diesel variants. This engine has been specifically calibrated for demanding applications like those encountered in the potash mine.
The Grenadier Station Wagon, Quartermaster pick-up, and Quartermaster Chassis Cab are manufactured at the Hambach factory in Moselle. Acquired by INEOS Automotive in January 2021, this state-of-the-art facility employs 1,700 people.
INEOS Automotive: A Vision Realised
INEOS Automotive was established in 2017 by Jim Ratcliffe, an automotive enthusiast and adventurer. He identified a market gap for a reliable and compliant modern 4X4. The senior team assembled to bring this vision to life launched the INEOS Grenadier in 2022.
The Grenadier offers best-in-class off-road capability along with modern comfort and refinement. In 2023, a double-cab pick-up variant named Quartermaster was introduced. February 2024 saw the unveiling of a third vehicle line called the INEOS Fusilier, which offers both all-electric and range-extender electric powertrain options.
INEOS Automotive is a subsidiary of INEOS, a leading manufacturer of petrochemicals, speciality chemicals, and oil products. Employing 26,000 people across 36 businesses, INEOS operates a production network spanning 194 sites in 29 countries.
