Comprehensive Report On Sedan Sales In India For May 2024
In May 2024, the Indian sedan market experienced a slight decline in sales, with a total of 31,246 units sold, marking a marginal decrease of 0.93% compared to May 2023. This decline is attributed to more buyers preferring SUVs over sedans.
Top Sedan Sales in May 2024
Maruti Dzire led the sedan segment with an impressive sale of 16,061 units, reflecting a substantial YoY growth of 41.94% and capturing 51.40% of the market share. Hyundai Aura / Xcent followed with sales of 4,433 units, a decline of 5.82% from the previous year, and securing 14.19% of the market share.

Honda Amaze experienced a sharper drop in sales by 29.19% to 2,215 units, accounting for 7.09% of the market, while Tata Tigor (including its EV variant) saw a decline of 22.33%, selling 2,098 units.
In the mid-size sedan category, Volkswagen Virtus topped the list with sales of 1,610 units and holding a market share of 5.15%. Skoda Slavia sold 1,538 units, reflecting a decrease of 9.26% compared to May 2023.

Hyundai Verna faced the steepest decline among top-selling sedans with a drop of 62.54% to 1,381 units, while Honda City struggled with sales down by 31.20% to just 1,054 units.
Maruti's Ciaz recorded a decrease of 26.41%, selling only 730 units in May. Toyota Camry and Skoda Superb experienced declines as well; Camry sold only 122 units (a drop of 14.08%), while Superb sold merely four units (a significant drop of 60%).

Month-on-Month Comparison
Comparing month-on-month sales figures for sedans in India reveals an overall growth rate of about 3.50%. Dzire's sales increased slightly by 1.49%, while Aura's monthly sales dipped by just over two percent.
Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia both showed remarkable growth rates; Virtus' sales soared by over thirty-six percent and Slavia's increased by nearly twenty-three percent.

On the other hand, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz experienced declines in their month-on-month sales figures; Verna's sales dropped by over twelve percent while Ciaz's decreased by nearly sixteen percent.
In the premium sedan segment, Toyota Camry and Skoda Superb both faced sharp declines; Camry's sales fell by almost thirty-two percent while Superb's plummeted by over sixty-nine percent.

In conclusion, although sedan sales have been declining due to increasing preference for SUVs among buyers in India, some models like Maruti Dzire and Volkswagen Virtus continue to perform well in their respective segments despite challenging market conditions.
