Indian Government Rolls Out Automatic Recharge System for Fastag Cards
The Indian government has announced a new system for Fastag cards that will eliminate the need for manual recharges. When the balance on a Fastag card drops below a certain limit, the system will automatically deduct money from the linked bank account. Here are the details.
Currently, motorists use Fastag cards to pay tolls at national highway toll plazas across India. Without a Fastag, motorists must pay double the toll amount. Fastag cards are now used by 99% of motorists in India. However, some still end up paying double the toll due to insufficient balance on their Fastag cards.

During urgent trips, motorists often forget to recharge their Fastag cards and only realize they have insufficient balance when they reach the toll plaza. This results in them paying double the toll because they cannot recharge at that moment. Recognizing this issue, the government has devised a solution.
Companies issuing Fastag cards will soon implement a new system that will automatically recharge the card from the linked bank account when the balance falls below a certain limit. The government has announced the introduction of a technology for Fastag recharge called "e-mandate". This will be implemented in line with Reserve Bank of India guidelines.
This new system will not make e-mandate subscription mandatory. Users can continue to recharge their Fastag cards manually if they wish. However, users who do not want to recharge manually can activate this e-mandate system for automatic recharge.
Through this system, users can set a condition to recharge their Fastag card when the balance falls below a certain limit. For example, if a user sets a condition to recharge with Rs. 1000 when the balance falls below Rs. 200, after the last Fastag toll deduction, when the balance falls below Rs. 200, Rs. 1000 will be automatically deducted from the linked bank account and credited to the Fastag balance.
This new system introduced by the government is expected to significantly reduce the number of motorists paying double tolls in India. It addresses the challenges faced by motorists when paying tolls and ensures smoother travel experiences.
Motorists often face issues during urgent trips due to insufficient balance on their Fastag cards. This leads to them paying double tolls as they cannot recharge at that moment. The automatic recharge system aims to solve this problem effectively.
The e-mandate technology will allow users to set specific conditions for recharging their Fastag cards. For instance, if a user sets a condition to recharge with Rs. 1000 when the balance falls below Rs. 200, after the last deduction, Rs. 1000 will be automatically deducted from their linked bank account and credited to their Fastag balance.
This initiative is expected to enhance convenience for motorists and ensure they do not face issues related to insufficient balance on their Fastag cards during urgent trips.
The new system will not make e-mandate subscription mandatory, allowing users to continue recharging manually if they prefer. However, those who opt for automatic recharge can activate this feature for seamless transactions.
The introduction of this technology aligns with Reserve Bank of India guidelines and aims to provide a hassle-free experience for motorists using national highways across India.
This move by the government is anticipated to benefit a large number of motorists by reducing instances of double toll payments due to insufficient balance on their Fastag cards.
