Indian Automotive Market Faces Export Challenges For Popular Models: Find Out Why

The Indian automotive market is thriving, with numerous vehicles sold domestically each month. Indian-made cars are also exported globally.

However, some models popular in India are seeing a decline in exports. Let's examine the vehicles performing well locally but facing challenges internationally.

Export Challenges for Popular Indian Cars

Mahindra, Maruti, Honda

The Mahindra Bolero, known for its durability, experienced low export numbers recently. Only three units were shipped abroad this month, a sharp drop from 53 units during the same period last year. Despite this, it remains popular in India.

Maruti WagonR is a favourite among Indian buyers, with thousands sold monthly. Yet, only 29 units were exported last month, down from 73 in September 2023. This suggests decreasing international interest.

Export Challenges for Popular Indian Cars

The Maruti XL6, a well-regarded 6-seater MPV in India, is also facing export difficulties. Last month, only 54 units were shipped overseas, a notable decrease from the 128 units exported in September of the previous year.

Honda Amaze, a small sedan by Honda, performs well in India's market with thousands sold monthly. However, exports have dwindled to 60 units last month from 90 units in September 2023.

Export Challenges for Popular Indian Cars

Mahindra Scorpio is another model experiencing low overseas demand. Known for its robust SUV status and long waiting periods locally, it isn't as popular abroad. Only 234 units were exported last month compared to 441 in September 2023.

This trend highlights that while these cars are highly popular in India, they don't always attract the same interest internationally. Various factors might explain the differing demand across these markets. Meanwhile, some cars not available in India perform well elsewhere.

Car manufacturers typically design vehicles considering local preferences and needs. Sometimes, vehicles that cater to both Indian and international tastes succeed abroad. However, those specifically designed for Indian consumers may not meet foreign demands, leading to lower exports.

Automakers understand their target markets and customer base. They know whether a car is suitable for export before introducing it for sale. Therefore, this decline in exports isn't a major concern!
