India Sets New Milestone With First FIA-CIK Approved Karting Facility

India is set to unveil its first karting facility capable of hosting world championship events. The Madras International Karting Arena (MIKA) will open at the Madras International Circuit in Irungattukottai. This track will be India's first FIA-CIK approved karting circuit, marking a significant milestone in the country's motorsport landscape.

On September 19, Mika Hakkinen, the double Formula One World Champion from 1998 and 1999, will inaugurate the facility. Vicky Chandhok, vice president of the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), shared that Hakkinen was chosen for this honour during discussions about the facility's name. "We dabbled with different options, but when we hit upon this name, we thought there was no better person than Mika Hakkinen to open it," said Chandhok.

State-of-the-Art Design

The 1.2km track has been designed by Driven International, a U.K.-based company. Karun Chandhok, India's second F1 driver, serves as a consultant for the project. Vicky Chandhok explained that every stage of the track's construction received CIK pre-approvals to ensure international standards were met. "Driven International and Karun have worked with CIK to ensure every square inch of the track is internationally approved," he said.

The existing Madras International Circuit (MIC) already features a drag racing strip and rally cross stages. The addition of the karting facility will make it a comprehensive venue for motorsports in India. The karting centre will also offer leisure karts for recreational purposes and is conveniently located in front of the race track for easy public access.

Boosting Local Talent

Chandhok highlighted that having a proper karting facility in India could help young racers stay in the country longer while competing at an international level. "We want to make our championships coveted," he said. With the F4 India championship already being organised, young racers can progress directly to F3 abroad, saving significant costs.

"Our kids can go abroad for F3 straight away, which saves Rs 8 to 9 crore," Chandhok added. He believes that bringing international events like the World Rotax finals to India will elevate local talent and reduce the need for them to travel to Europe for competition.

The new facility aims to attract world championship events and make no compromises on quality regarding safety and barriers. "We hope to attract world championship events here," Chandhok stated, emphasising their commitment to high standards.

The inauguration of MIKA marks a significant development in Indian motorsports, providing a platform for local talent and hosting international events. This new addition is expected to boost India's presence in global motorsport competitions significantly.
