India Emerges As Top Source Of Vehicle Imports For South Africa's Automotive Industry Since 2013
Since 2013, India has been the leading source of vehicle imports for South Africa's automotive industry, according to the Automotive Business Council's BRICS+ Research Report 2024. This is largely due to India's role as a global hub for small and entry-level vehicles, which dominate sales in the domestic market.
Mahindra and Tata have made significant inroads into the South African market. Mahindra executives often refer to South Africa as their second home outside India. This is due to substantial investments, including a production line in Durban. Both companies have firmly established their automotive products in the region.

BRICS Influence on Automotive Trade
South Africa's inclusion in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) has bolstered its international standing and trade relations with these economic powers. Since joining BRICS in 2010, South Africa saw an increase in automotive exports to all four partner countries from 2010 to 2011.
The report highlights that China and India have consistently ranked among South Africa's top 10 trading partners since 2010. This is primarily due to rising automotive imports. China's recent rise as the second-largest source of vehicle imports since 2022 reflects its appeal to cost-conscious consumers seeking affordable models.

Trade Balance and Challenges
The automotive trade balance heavily favoured India in 2023, with an import-to-export value ratio of 97.7 to 1. For China, this ratio was 56.8 to 1, while Brazil had a ratio of 2.6 to 1. The report suggests BRICS nations should explore complementarities and promote capacity-building in automotive trade and investment-related issues.
Despite initial growth after joining BRICS, South African automotive exports declined for India between 2010 and 2023. Exports increased for Brazil, China, and Russia but remained negligible compared to the domestic industry's total export revenue of Rand 270.8 billion in 2023.
Opportunities with BRICS+ Expansion
The report outlines opportunities for South Africa following the addition of five more countries to the BRICS+ bloc from January 2024. This expansion could reshape global industries like the automotive sector by optimising supply chains within BRICS+.
The integration of new member countries into BRICS+ aims to create a more equitable global landscape that many believe is currently biased against them. The diverse group of potential members is attracted by this shared goal.

Between 2010 and 2023, automotive imports from China, India, and Brazil into South Africa grew significantly. However, broader market conditions, policy factors, tariff measures, and country profiles not suited for specific premium models affected export performance among BRICS nations.
