India To Implement Satellite-Based Electronic Toll Collection For Highways
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited global bids for a new electronic toll collection system based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This initiative aims to eliminate the need for physical toll booths on highways.
Enhancing Toll Collection Efficiency
The GNSS-based electronic toll collection system seeks to offer a seamless tolling experience for National Highway users. The goal is to enhance efficiency and transparency in toll operations. The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by NHAI, has called for expressions of interest from qualified global companies.

The new system will initially operate alongside the existing FASTag system. Both RFID-based ETC and GNSS-based ETC will run simultaneously. Dedicated Global Navigation Satellite System lanes will be established at toll plazas to allow vehicles using the GNSS-based system to pass through freely.
Leveraging Advanced Technology
The GNSS-based toll collection will use advanced satellite technology. The EoI aims to identify experienced companies to develop robust toll charger software. This software will be essential for implementing the GNSS-based toll collection system in India.
Implementing this system will facilitate smoother vehicle movement on National Highways. It promises several benefits, including barrier-free tolling and distance-based tolling. Users will only pay for the stretch they travel on a National Highway.
DriveSpark Thinks
This technology will enable automatic deduction of toll charges without the need for cash transactions, reducing traffic congestion at toll booths. By streamlining the toll collection process, it will save time for commuters improve the overall transportation experience. This will be a huge improvement from the jams we face at toll gates nowadays.
Additionally, the data collected through this system can be analyzed to identify patterns and trends, leading to more informed decision-making in road infrastructure planning and management. Overall, the Global Navigation Satellite System electronic toll collection system is set to revolutionize the tolling industry and bring about numerous benefits for both authorities and road users.
