India To Streamline Driving License Process Through Authorized Driving Schools From June 2024

In India, a significant number of teenagers are more interested in obtaining a driving license than a voter ID card. However, getting a license involves several steps and conditions.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in operating a vehicle and have thorough knowledge of traffic laws. They must successfully showcase their driving skills in front of a Regional Transport Office (RTO) official. Failing any of these criteria delays the license issuance.

Driving License Process Revamped in India

A new regulation will take effect on June 1st, 2024, eliminating the mandatory visit to RTO offices for driving license applications. Instead, authorized driving schools will conduct the entire process, from application to issuance.

Previously, individuals had to visit RTOs to submit applications for driving licenses. This new rule empowers private organizations to handle the application tests and approvals. Subsequently, these schools will also issue the driver's licenses.

Eligibility Criteria for Driving Schools

Not all driving schools will be eligible for this authorization. Only institutions with the necessary resources and infrastructure for conducting driver tests will be granted permission. These requirements include:

  • Minimum land area of 1 acre.
  • An additional 2 acres if the school provides training for four-wheeled vehicles.
  • Availability of facilities for driving tests.
  • A team of experienced and qualified instructors with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field.
  • High school or Diploma qualification (or equivalent) for all instructors is mandatory.
  • Physical fitness is essential for instructors.

Training Duration and Requirements

The training period for obtaining a driving license is:

Vehicle Type Training Duration Completion Time
Light Motor Vehicles 29 hours Within 4 weeks
Heavy Motor Vehicles 38 hours Within 4 weeks

DriveSpark Thinks

Compared to several other countries, acquiring a driving license in India is relatively straightforward. The new regulations aim to simplify this process by entrusting private entities with the responsibility.

Additionally, advanced technology and stringent camera surveillance will be utilized during driving tests, ensuring a thorough and fair evaluation process for license issuance.
