India's Auto Retail Sector: Trends And Challenges In FY25
Car sales in India have experienced a slowdown recently, with only a three percent growth in June this year. The first quarter of the financial year saw similar trends, with dealers reporting significant impacts from elections, extreme heat, and market liquidity issues.
Automobile retail sales increased by 9%-on-year in the June of FY25, to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). All segments except tractors reported growth. Overall retail sales rose to 61,91,225 units from 56,59,060 units in the same quarter of FY24.

Passenger Vehicle Sales
Passenger vehicle retails increased by 2.53%, reaching 9,20,047 units compared to 8,97,361 units a year ago. Despite strong bookings and customer flow, high competition and excess supply posed challenges for sustained growth in this segment.
"Despite strong bookings and customer flow, high competition, excess supply and discounting presented challenges for sustained growth in the PV segment," said FADA President Manish Raj Singhania.
Impact of Extreme Heat
The extreme heat led to an 18% drop in showroom walk-ins in May. Inventory levels reached an all-time high of 62-67 days by the end of June.
"Despite improved product availability and substantial discounts aimed at stimulating demand, market sentiment remains subdued due to the extreme heat and delayed monsoons, resulting in 15 per cent fewer walk-ins," Singhania added.
Two-Wheeler Segment
Two-wheeler retails stood at 45,54,255 units in April-June, up 12.56% compared to 40,46,169 units in the previous year. "The recovery in the two-wheeler segment is promising, largely due to the emerging performance in rural areas, although these are early trends," Singhania noted. However, this segment also faced significant challenges from extreme heat and elections.
Three-Wheeler Sales
Three-wheeler sales rose by 11.36%, reaching 2,72,691 units from 2,44,878 units last fiscal year. This growth indicates a positive trend despite broader market challenges.

Commercial Vehicles
Commercial vehicle retail sales saw a marginal increase to 2,46,513 units compared to 2,44,834 units previously. "Commercial vehicle segment experienced a slowdown due to the elections and a pause in infrastructure projects. In April, elections dampened sentiment causing delays in expansion plans," Singhania explained.
Tractor Sales Decline
Tractor retail sales declined by 12.44%, falling to 1,97,719 units from 2,25,818 units a year ago. This decline highlights ongoing challenges within this specific market segment.
The industry body remains committed to advocating for prudent inventory control and improved financing options to ensure resilience and sustained growth within the auto retail sector. FADA represents over 15,000 automobile dealerships with more than 30,000 sales outlets across India.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations continues its efforts towards strategic planning for better market conditions amidst various challenges faced by different segments.
