India's BS7 Emission Norms: Automakers Told To Prep For 2027
India's Union Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has called on automakers to begin preparing for the next-generation emission norms, BS7, which are expected to align with the Euro 7 standards set to be implemented in European Union countries from 2025.
Gadkari has advised manufacturers not to wait for a formal government announcement and instead commence research into the production of BS7-compliant vehicles. India is likely to adopt BS7 around 2027.
Challenges and changes with BS7 norms
The switch from BS4 to BS6 emission norms in India led many manufacturers to cease production of diesel engines due to the high cost of making them compliant.
The transition to BS7 is anticipated to be even more stringent, necessitating manufacturers to modify their engines to decrease emissions. Additionally, the BS7 norms will encompass electric vehicles (EVs) and introduce regulations governing battery durability.

Fuel neutrality and additional emission limits
Under the new BS7 norms, both petrol and diesel vehicles will have identical emission standards, resulting in higher costs for diesel vehicles. Furthermore, these norms will extend beyond tailpipe emissions by imposing limits on emissions from brakes, tyres, and refuelling processes.
The move aims to reduce overall pollution levels and improve air quality in urban areas. It will also push automakers to develop cleaner technologies and alternative fuel options to meet the stringent regulations.
However, critics argue that the increased costs may deter consumers from purchasing diesel vehicles, which could impact the automotive industry and consumer choices.
Environmental benefits and impact on technology
The primary objective of implementing stricter emission norms is to create a cleaner automotive ecosystem and enhance environmental conditions. Engines that comply with BS7 standards are expected to be more fuel-efficient, potentially leading to increased adoption of hybrid technology.
Moreover, the longer lifespan of EV batteries due to rigorous regulations will decrease the demand for essential raw materials used in battery production.
