IIT Delhi's New HEV Design Certificate Programme Aims To Shape Electric Mobility's Future

With the Indian government's goal of electrifying 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030, the automotive industry is rapidly moving towards a sustainable future. This shift has created a significant demand for professionals skilled in designing and developing hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) has responded to this need by launching a unique Certificate Programme in Hybrid Electric Vehicles Design.

The programme, spanning six months, is tailored for engineers from mechanical, electrical, automotive, and related fields. It aims to provide a robust foundation in EV/HEV technology. Additionally, it caters to professionals transitioning from traditional internal combustion engine technology to EVs and HEVs and those seeking to enhance their expertise in the EV/HEV sector.

Programme Structure and Content

The IITD Certificate Programme includes live sessions designed by renowned IITD faculty. These sessions align with the FAME scheme and offer industry-oriented insights. Participants will also engage in a Capstone project guided by top IITD faculty members. An optional one-day campus immersion at IIT Delhi's Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) is available towards the end of the programme.

Modules cover various topics such as technology integration complexity, energy storage systems, battery design and modelling, and automotive hybridisation and electrification (AHE). This comprehensive curriculum ensures participants gain advanced knowledge and skills required to innovate in the HEV sector.

Industry Demand and Market Growth

A report by Arthur D. Little titled "Transforming India into a Global Automotive Hub: Roadmap for the Automotive Ecosystem" projects that India's automotive industry will be worth $1 trillion by 2035.

Another report by Counterpoint Research predicts India's EV market will grow by 66% in 2024. To meet this demand, there is an urgent need for skilled professionals who can design, develop, and manufacture hybrid electric vehicles.

The programme integrates key concepts such as thermodynamics, IC engines, electric machines and drives, power electronics, automotive hybridisation, and battery design. This integration provides participants with a comprehensive outlook necessary to drive innovation in the HEV sector.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible candidates include engineering graduates from mechanical, electrical, automotive, or allied areas or diploma holders (10+2+3) from recognised universities (UGC/AICTE/DEC/AIU/State Government/international universities). The programme begins on September 29, 2024, with a fee of INR 1,10,000 plus GST.

Upon successful completion of the programme with at least 50% grading and maintaining a minimum attendance of 50%, participants will receive a prestigious certificate of completion from CEP, IIT Delhi.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain the ability to explain internal combustion engine operating characteristics. They will also understand vehicle hybridisation and electrification processes. Additionally, they will learn about various electric machines and propulsion technologies used in HEVs.

The programme also covers working principles of different energy storage systems. Participants will learn testing and modelling methods to characterise battery performance, reliability, and safety.

This high-impact programme aims to equip professionals with advanced knowledge required to design innovative HEVs that meet evolving industry needs. By bridging the gap between conventional automotive engineering and modern EV/HEV technology, it prepares participants for future challenges in vehicle electrification.
