Hyundai Robotics LAB Clinches Major Wins At 2024 Red Dot Design Awards

Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB has achieved significant recognition at the 2024 Red Dot Design Award, securing three prestigious accolades, including two Best of Best titles. The awards highlight the Group's commitment to integrating innovative robotics technologies with customer needs.

The AI-powered Safety Inspection Robot, one of the Best of Best winners, operates at Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS). This robot uses artificial intelligence to inspect machinery within the smart urban mobility hub and detect abnormalities. Its design includes a sculpted cover to prevent sensor blind spots, ensuring accurate detection and increased productivity.

The robot can elevate its camera on a telescopic extension to enhance its field of view and improve recognition capabilities. Equipped with four PnD (Plug and Drive) modules, it navigates around obstacles on the production floor. This robot is capable of inspecting gauges, valves, and components in hard-to-reach places, correcting false readings caused by human error.

Another Best of Best winner is the MobED Delivery robot, a compact mobility platform designed for seamless movement and safe delivery of goods. Its DnL (Drive and Lift) module integrates driving, steering, and braking into a single eccentric wheel mechanism. This allows MobED Delivery to adjust its body inclination and height dynamically.

The robot’s wheelbase can be minimized to reduce inconvenience for pedestrians while ensuring secure transportation. It can traverse different terrains effortlessly, with its load tray extending towards the ground when inclined. The conveyor belt guides items smoothly towards the rear of the robot, ensuring safe delivery.

DAL-e Delivery Robot

The DAL-e Delivery robot was also recognized as a Red Dot Winner for its sophisticated design and functionality. This robot delivers food, beverages, and parcels in complex spaces like offices and shopping malls using its PnD module. It features a top display and signature exterior LED lighting to indicate its current state.

The unit’s load cabin securely stores delivery items during transit with double doors that open automatically. A powered tray operates upon delivery. The DAL-e Delivery robot navigates autonomously thanks to a suite of cameras and sensors.

"These awards are the result of Hyundai Motor Group's continuous efforts to ensure that customers and innovative robotics technologies can meet naturally," said Dong Jin Hyun, Vice President and Head of Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor and Kia. "We will continue to make efforts as a friendly guide to the robot intelligence society, alongside devotion to take the lead in turning imagination into reality."
