Hyundai N Launches RN24 At N Day 2024: A Vision For High-Performance Electric Vehicles
At the N Day 2024 online event, Hyundai N introduced its latest innovation, the RN24. This next-generation 'Rolling Lab' showcases Hyundai's vision for high-performance electric vehicles (EVs). The RN24 combines the advanced power electronics system of the IONIQ 5 N with a chassis inspired by World Rally Championship (WRC) designs. This setup aims to deliver maximum agility and precise control, highlighting Hyundai's commitment to future EV technology.
The RN24 is not just a test vehicle; it represents Hyundai N's ambition to redefine high-performance EVs. By integrating motorsport technology into production models, Hyundai continues its legacy of innovation. The RN24 follows in the footsteps of previous Rolling Labs like the RM series and RN22e, serving as a bridge between motorsport advancements and consumer vehicles.
The RN24's design focuses on fitting a powerful EV powertrain into a compact package. Using the IONIQ 5 N’s 650 PS dual-motor power electronics system, Hyundai has created an agile and lightweight vehicle. This approach reflects their dedication to enhancing drivability and precision rather than just increasing speed and power.
Hyundai N's three pillars—Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar—are central to their philosophy. These principles guide the development of engaging driving experiences made possible by EV technology. "Hyundai N is not just a brand but a representation of our commitment to innovation and high performance," stated Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President.
The RN24 features a WRC-style suspension with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes. This setup enhances performance by allowing drivers to adjust various parameters using steering wheel controls. The vehicle also includes an advanced cooling system for its battery and motor, ensuring optimal performance during demanding conditions.
An external sound system adds to the driving experience with two side speakers complementing IONIQ 5 N’s N Active Sound+. The rear fender design acts as a soundbox, creating an immersive soundtrack that matches the vehicle's capabilities. These features highlight Hyundai's focus on delivering an engaging driving experience.
Innovative Motorsport Technologies
The RN24 incorporates several innovative technologies from motorsport. Its 'Rally Mode' motor torque control optimizes torque distribution across all four wheels, similar to systems used in Hyundai’s i20 N Rally 1 car. This electronic control simplifies complexity and cost for future production models.
The e-Handbrake is another feature inspired by Hyundai’s WRC experience. It reduces weight by eliminating physical brakes used in traditional systems. Recently tested at the Central European Rally stage, this technology exemplifies Hyundai’s commitment to advancing motorsport-inspired innovations.
Aerodynamic Enhancements
Visually, the RN24 stands out with its exoskeleton-style roll cage inspired by WRC concepts. This design ensures safety while enhancing stability during high-speed maneuvers. Additional features include Elantra N matte black forged wheels and a spoiler from TCR models for improved aerodynamics.
3D-printed gussets contribute to better rigidity and weight reduction, showcasing Hyundai’s innovative approach to design and performance. These elements define RN24 as a testament to pushing boundaries in electric motorsport technology.
