Hyundai Motor's XCIENT Fuel Cell Trucks Achieve Record Of 10 Million Km Total Driving Distance In Switzerland

Hyundai Motor Company’s XCIENT Fuel Cell electric heavy-duty trucks have surpassed a cumulative driving distance of 10 million km in Swiss fleet usage. This milestone highlights the long-term reliability of Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell technology, achieved in just three years and eight months since the trucks began operations in October 2020.

This accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks. Currently, 48 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks are operational in Switzerland. These trucks are powered by two 90-kW fuel cell systems, totalling 180 kW, and a 350 kW e-motor, providing a maximum range of over 400 km.

Compared to a fleet of regular diesel trucks, which would emit approximately 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the same distance, the XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks offer a significant reduction in carbon emissions. This reduction is equivalent to the carbon absorbed annually by around 700,000 pine trees or the creation of a pine forest covering 508 hectares (5 million square meters).

All XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks in Switzerland use only ‘green hydrogen,’ ensuring no carbon emissions during production. This contributes to an eco-friendly hydrogen value chain in Europe. Hyundai Motor plans to use data on mileage, hydrogen consumption, and fuel cell stack performance to continuously improve its hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Global Deployment and Future Plans

Hyundai Motor is actively involved in creating a commercial hydrogen ecosystem, including production, charging infrastructure, and consumption of hydrogen. At CES 2024, Hyundai announced the expansion of HTWO, its brand for the entire hydrogen value chain business. This move aims to expedite the transition to a hydrogen society.

In May, Hyundai unveiled its U.S. clean logistics business at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo 2024. Key projects include the NorCAL ZERO Project, deploying 30 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks in California for freight transport, and the Clean Logistics Project at Hyundai's production facility in Georgia.

Global Reach and Recognition

The XCIENT Fuel Cell truck is recognized for its reliability and eco-friendliness and has been deployed in ten countries: the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Korea, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. This global deployment underscores Hyundai's commitment to building a sustainable future through zero-emission vehicles.
