Hyundai Motor Launches 'Cities In Motion' Series To Address Urban Sustainability Challenges Globally

Hyundai Motor Company has launched a digital series called ‘Cities in Motion’ on YouTube. This series showcases how cities worldwide are addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainability. The episodes explore initiatives in London, Frankfurt, Jakarta, and Los Angeles, highlighting innovative solutions to urban challenges.

The series emphasises that cities, though covering only 2% of the earth's surface, contribute significantly to global environmental problems. They account for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions and 80% of energy consumption. Hyundai Motor aims to address these issues by asking how cities can become more sustainable.

In collaboration with James Stewart and Voice for Nature, Hyundai embarked on a journey using IONIQ electric vehicles. They visited London, Frankfurt, Jakarta, and LA to explore each city's unique approach to sustainability. "We are proud to spotlight global environmental initiatives," said Sungwon Jee from Hyundai Motor Company.

The London episode highlights the importance of urban green spaces for improving air quality and human well-being. SUGi, a non-profit organisation, is creating ‘pocket forests’ in the city and involving children in tree planting. This initiative aligns with Hyundai’s IONIQ Forest project launched in 2016.

Frankfurt’s episode delves into its sustainable urban planning efforts. The city aims to be climate-neutral by 2035 and fully renewable by 2050. It offers various mobility options like cycling routes and hydrogen trains. Homes are designed to harness solar, wind, and geothermal energy.

Jakarta’s episode addresses Indonesia’s plastic waste issue linked to river pollution. Using the IONIQ 6 made from recycled materials, it introduces local enterprises managing waste. Hyundai partners with ‘Save the Children’ to educate kids about the circular economy through its ‘Hyundai Continue’ initiative.

Transitioning to Renewable Energy

The LA episode focuses on the city’s shift towards renewable energy. LA plans for all vehicles to be zero-emission by 2050 and aims for a renewable power grid by 2045. The episode features ‘GRID Alternatives,’ which provides low-cost solar power solutions.

The series offers an inspiring look at cities' sustainable transformations and their potential global impact. Despite challenges, cities strive for positive changes for future generations. Hyundai remains committed to promoting sustainability worldwide under its vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.

Founded in 1967, Hyundai Motor Company operates in over 200 countries with more than 120,000 employees tackling mobility challenges globally. With a vision of ‘Progress for Humanity,’ Hyundai is transforming into a Smart Mobility Solution Provider by investing in advanced technologies like robotics and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
