Hyundai Motor Group Leads Automotive Industry With Most IIHS Top Safety Picks In 2024 Awards
Hyundai Motor Group has achieved significant recognition, with 22 models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis receiving the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) and TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) awards. This accomplishment highlights Hyundai's commitment to safety, as it surpasses all other automakers in this annual evaluation by securing 21% of the total awards.
Hyundai Motor secured nine awards, including four TSP+ and five TSP. The IONIQ 5, KONA, and TUCSON small SUVs, along with the IONIQ 6 midsize electric car, were among the TSP+ winners. The ELANTRA small car, SONATA midsize car, PALISADE and SANTA FE midsize SUVs, and SANTA CRUZ small pickup truck received TSP awards.
Genesis earned eight awards: seven TSP+ and one TSP. The G80 (models built after October 2023), Electrified G80, G90 (models built after October 2023) large luxury cars, GV60 small SUV, GV70 (2025MY) (models built after April 2024), Electrified GV70 (models built after April 2024), and GV80 (models built after August 2023) midsize luxury SUVs were awarded TSP+. The GV70 (models built after November 2023) midsize luxury SUV won a TSP award.
Kia received five awards: one TSP+ for the TELLURIDE midsize SUV and four TSPs for the K4 small car, SPORTAGE small SUV, EV9 (models built after January 2024), and SORENTO (2024-25MY) midsize SUVs. These accolades underscore Kia's dedication to maintaining high safety standards across its vehicle lineup.
The IIHS has raised its criteria for the 2024 awards to encourage improvements in rear-seat passenger protection and pedestrian crash avoidance systems. Vehicles must achieve Good ratings in specific tests to qualify for a TSP award. For a TSP+, they need Good ratings in additional tests and at least an Acceptable rating in updated moderate front crash tests.
Enhanced Safety Standards
The updated moderate front overlap test now includes a second dummy behind the driver to emphasize rear-seat safety. This change is part of the new requirements for the 2024 TSP+ awards. Both award categories also require an Acceptable or Good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights on all trim levels.
"The Group’s exceptional performance in the IIHS 2024 Top Safety awards is a testament to our unwavering focus on safety and continuous efforts to provide the highest level of protection for vehicle occupants and other road users," stated Brian Latouf, President and Global Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Hyundai Motor Group. "The results also reflect our strategy to maintain safety leadership for 2025 and years to come."
Hyundai ranked second among global brands with the most awards while Genesis tied for third place with Honda and Mazda. This achievement highlights Hyundai Motor Group's leadership in automotive safety standards globally.
