Hyundai Motor Group And Rhode Island School Of Design Launch Regeneration Studio To Explore Future Mobility Solutions
The Regeneration Studio, a collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), explores the intersection of nature, art, design, and mobility. This initiative aims to innovate by integrating ecological insights with advanced design practices. The studio's focus is on creating sustainable solutions that enhance our relationship with natural systems.
Now in its fifth year, this partnership involves RISD faculty and students working alongside Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia designers. They are exploring the theme of 'Future Structures' through courses and research activities. The studio is led by experts at RISD’s Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab.
The Regeneration Studio's programming includes a biomimicry seminar in the fall and studio courses in the spring. These activities extend into summer with intensive sessions and fellowships for Hyundai designers and engineers. This approach fosters innovation by blending nature's principles with cutting-edge studio practices.
"The Regeneration Studio fosters innovation by integrating nature's design principles with advanced studio practices, aiming to restore the relationship between humanity and living systems," said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai & Genesis Global Design.
RISD President Crystal Williams highlighted the collaboration's role in shaping future realities. "Through this work, RISD and Hyundai Motor Group are conceiving of future realities that change the way we move through space, understand and use materials, and interpret structures in support of a flourishing and healthy ecological system," she stated.
The partnership encourages a unique dialogue between scientific understanding and creative practice. It aims to address industry needs by studying nature as an inventive source of knowledge. This collaboration sees mobility as an integrated system where environmental justice aligns with creative approaches.
Innovative Research Approach
Karim Habib, Executive Vice President at Kia Global Design, emphasized learning from nature’s resilience: "Nature doesn't just inspire — it challenges us to rethink and regenerate." This perspective drives efforts to balance human wellness with planetary health.
The Regeneration Studio builds on a research platform established in 2019 specifically for Hyundai Motor Group by RISD Strategic Partnerships. Faculty members guide students through diverse inquiries while Hyundai designers provide feedback throughout the process.
Commitment to Creativity
RISD Provost Touba Ghadessi noted how deep inquiries generate actionable results respecting design principles: "This mutually respectful dialogue allows us to find answers to industry needs through the study of nature as a generous, inventive, and boundless source of knowledge."
The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) was founded in 1877 in Providence. It offers 44 degree programs supported by over 33,000 alumni worldwide who demonstrate artists' vital role today. RISD promotes cross-disciplinary learning encouraging personal creative processes among students.
