Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore Celebrates First Anniversary With Strategic Vision For Sustainable Mobility
Hyundai Motor Group recently marked a significant milestone with the first anniversary of its Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGICS). This hub plays a crucial role in advancing Hyundai's vision for sustainable and human-centric mobility. Executive Chair Euisun Chung highlighted HMGICS's strategic importance during a town hall meeting, emphasising its role in shaping future mobility solutions.
"Our journey has been impressive so far, but the best is yet to come," said Executive Chair Chung, applauding the dedication and hard work of HMGICS employees, who continue to move forward by responding proactively to rapidly changing circumstances. "We can meet the challenges ahead, because we are Hyundai. We can meet the challenges because we have what it takes—the right people like you, and our vision of progress for humanity."
The innovation centre has made notable strides over the past year. It has implemented an advanced cell-based production system that enhances logistics and assembly automation through robotics, AI, and digital twin technology. This system supports the production of diverse mobility solutions such as electric vehicles and robots.
Hyundai Motor President and CEO Chang, who will become the Group’s Vice Chair as of January 1st, emphasized the role of the innovation hub in the Hyundai Motor Group long-term strategy, saying: "We will proactively develop essential technologies for future factories, such as AI, robotics, and automation, and verify their effectiveness through concrete projects. The expertise accumulated during this process will become key assets for building smart factories and will be applied to Hyundai’s global manufacturing sites."
HMGICS is committed to engaging with local communities by nurturing talent and collaborating with research institutions. In 2024, it increased its local workforce by 30%, focusing on R&D and engineering roles. The centre also partners with local institutions to offer internships in advanced manufacturing technologies.
The innovative manufacturing methods developed at HMGICS are being gradually integrated into Hyundai's global factories. This includes facilities like Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia and an electric vehicle plant in Ulsan. These advancements aim to boost manufacturing competitiveness by enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
Enhancing Customer Experience
Beyond manufacturing innovations, HMGICS is redefining customer experiences. Visitors can enjoy immersive Discovery Tours featuring 3D virtual reality tours of EV production processes. They can also take test rides on Skytrack or explore a two-story vertical smart farm within the facility.
The smart farm supplies produce to Na Oh, a Korean restaurant at HMGICS led by three-Michelin-Star Chef Corey Lee. Opened in June, this restaurant follows a seed-to-table concept that adds cultural value to HMGICS's broader mission.
A Year of Achievements
This year has seen significant achievements at HMGICS. The centre produced Singapore's first locally built EV, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in 2023. It also debuted the Hyundai IONIQ 6 in 2024. Both models have received global recognition for their design and eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
Executive Chair Chung reiterated HMGICS's mission to develop sustainable mobility solutions while enhancing customer experiences: "HMGICS is exploring new business ideas and technologies that will revolutionize future mobility."
