Hyundai Motor Company Names José Muñoz As New Chief Executive Officer Effective January 2025

José Muñoz has been appointed as the President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, effective January 1, 2025. He will replace Jaehoon Chang, who is moving up to Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group's Automotive Division. Muñoz will guide Hyundai's global operations, focusing on customer-centric strategies and next-generation mobility advancements like electrification and hydrogen technology.

Muñoz joined Hyundai in 2019 as President and Global Chief Operating Officer. His role expanded in 2022 to include oversight of Europe, India, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific. He also led global sales and service planning. Under his leadership, Hyundai achieved record sales and market share growth in North America.

The new CEO will continue to advance Hyundai's vision of 'Progress for Humanity.' This includes strengthening its global management system to enhance its brand status worldwide. Muñoz aims to maintain Hyundai's growth trajectory while focusing on exceeding customer expectations.

Jaehoon Chang praised Muñoz's leadership skills, stating, "José is a proven leader with vast global experience and is ideally suited to lead Hyundai as competitiveness and business uncertainty increases." Chang emphasized the company's commitment to a future centered on mobility and energy.

Before joining Hyundai, Muñoz was Nissan Motor Corporation's Chief Performance Officer. He also served as Chairman of Nissan China and North America during his 15-year tenure there. His efforts resulted in significant profit growth and record sales for Nissan.

Muñoz has a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from Polytechnic University of Madrid and an Executive MBA from IE Business School in Madrid. He completed executive management programs at Cranfield School of Management in the UK and INSEAD Business School in France.

Investment in U.S. Manufacturing

Under Muñoz’s leadership, Hyundai is investing $12.6 billion in the U.S., including a new production facility called Metaplant America and two battery joint ventures in Georgia. These investments aim to bolster Hyundai’s manufacturing capabilities in North America.

Muñoz expressed gratitude for his new role: "It’s an honour to serve Hyundai, our employees, customers, dealers and other stakeholders in this new role." He acknowledged the trust placed in him by Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang.
