Hyundai Strengthens Championship Lead With Stellar Performance At Virginia Raceway
Hyundai has strengthened its lead in the Manufacturers’ Championship for the 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Championship (IMPC) by achieving a sixth double-podium finish this season. The automaker's entries secured three of the top four positions, with both the No. 99 and No. 33 cars making significant comebacks from the back of the field to reach the podium.
The No. 99 Victor Gonzalez Racing Team Hyundai Elantra N TCR, driven by Morgan Burkhard and Tyler Gonzalez, delivered an impressive performance. Starting seventh on the grid, Burkhard skillfully navigated through the pack, positioning the team for a podium finish. A strategic pit stop under yellow-flag conditions allowed Gonzalez to take over and lead for 15 laps before finishing in second place.
In addition to their racing success, Hyundai and Bryan Herta Autosport raised $5,400 for Hyundai Hope on Wheels by leading 54 laps during the race at VIRginia International Raceway. This initiative pledges $100 for every lap led by a Hyundai Elantra N TCR throughout the season.
The No. 33 car, driven by Robert Wickens and Harry Gottsacker, also showcased remarkable resilience. Despite starting from the back due to a penalty that negated their qualifying position, Wickens quickly moved through the field. After a driver change, Gottsacker continued to push forward, eventually securing third place after battling with teammate Mason Filippi in the No. 98 car.
Mark Wilkins began in second place and maintained his position early in the race, closely following pole sitter Bryson Morris in the No. 77 car. However, traffic during a pit stop caused Mason Filippi to re-enter further down the field. Filippi managed to cut through traffic and finished fourth after competing with Gottsacker and Gonzalez.
After securing his first IMPC pole position, Bryson Morris and co-driver Taylor Hagler finished sixth in their No. 77 Hyundai Elantra N TCR due to strategy disruptions caused by yellow flags. Following this eighth round of IMPC competition, Hyundai now leads the Manufacturers’ Championship by 60 points.
