Hyundai Unveils Series Hybrid Technology For 2026 With Over 900km Range

Hyundai is set to introduce its series hybrid technology in 2026, with the first model launching internationally in 2027. This development was announced during Hyundai's 2024 CEO Investor Day. The new Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology is of Hyundai's Dynamic Capabilities strategy and will integrate internal combustion engines with electric motors.

Hyundai's EREV to Offer Impressive Range

The upcoming EREV models are expected to deliver a combined range exceeding 900km, utilising both internal combustion engines and electric motors. This technology will primarily target the North American and Chinese markets. Additionally, the system will support four-wheel-drive capabilities by employing two electric motors.

In a series hybrid system, also known as a "range extender," the internal combustion engine functions solely as a generator. Instead of directly powering the wheels, it charges an electric motor that drives the wheels. This approach aims to reduce costs by minimising the need for larger-capacity batteries.

Expansion Plans for Hybrid and EV Models

Hyundai plans to expand its hybrid line-up from seven to fourteen models by 2030, including luxury models under its Genesis brand. The company also aims to offer a full range of EVs, from affordable options to luxury and high-performance vehicles, totalling 21 models by 2030.

The new EREV technology will enter production in 2026 and launch in 2027. This hybrid tech is expected to help Hyundai address the slowing demand for EVs by offering a cost-competitive alternative.

Competition in Hybrid Technology

Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai's main competitor in India, has also confirmed plans to use a similar range-extender hybrid system for future low- and mid-level hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). This system differs from Toyota's series-parallel hybrid system found in models like the Grand Vitara and Invicto. Maruti's Fronx facelift, due next year, will be the first model equipped with their in-house strong hybrid technology.

Hyundai's new hybrid tech represents a significant step forward in their commitment to developing innovative automotive solutions. By combining internal combustion engines with electric motors, they aim to provide consumers with more efficient and versatile vehicle options.

This initiative aligns with Hyundai's broader strategy of enhancing its product line-up while addressing market demands. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Hyundai remains focused on delivering cutting-edge technologies that meet consumer needs.

The introduction of this series hybrid technology underscores Hyundai's dedication to sustainability and innovation. With plans for an extensive range of EVs and hybrids, Hyundai is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving automotive landscape.
