Hyundai's Kona Electric Records Zero Sales In India Despite Discounts
Hyundai, a prominent car manufacturer in India, has encountered an unusual situation. Despite being the second-largest carmaker in the country, Hyundai failed to sell a single unit of its Kona Electric model in May 2024. This is particularly surprising given the company's strong market presence and extensive product range.
Hyundai, based in South Korea, has a significant footprint in the Indian automobile market. The company offers a wide array of vehicles across various segments, consistently updating its models to cater to Indian consumers' preferences. Hyundai's cars generally receive a positive market response, contributing to its status as the second-largest car manufacturer in India after Maruti.

The Hyundai Kona Electric has struggled to attract buyers recently. Despite a substantial discount of up to Rs 4 lakh announced in May, the model did not record any sales for the month. This follows a similar trend from April, where no units were sold either. The discount has been extended into June in hopes of boosting sales.
Previous Sales Data
In December 2023, Hyundai sold 19 units of the Kona Electric. The highest sales were recorded in January 2023, with 102 units sold. However, sales began to decline in February with 86 units and further dropped to 71 units in March. Since then, the model has not found any buyers.

Features and Specifications
The Hyundai Kona Electric is available with two battery pack options: 44.4 kWh and 64.4 kWh. These battery packs offer a range of up to 490 km on a single charge. The vehicle includes features such as a 12.3-inch dual-screen setup, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), LED lighting, and an electronic gear selector.
Pricing and Market Position
The Kona Electric is positioned as a premium electric SUV within Hyundai's lineup. Its high pricing is considered a significant factor behind its lackluster sales performance. The substantial discount aims to make the vehicle more appealing to potential buyers.

DriveSpark Thinks
The effectiveness of Hyundai's discount strategy will be evident once the June sales figures are released. The company hopes that the extended discount will help generate interest and improve sales for the Kona Electric.
