Hyundai And Kia Join Forces With Exide Energy To Make EV Batteries In India
South Korean carmakers Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have taken a significant step towards the electric vehicle (EV) revolution in India by entering into a strategic partnership with Exide Energy Solutions Ltd.
This collaboration, centered around the development and production of EV batteries, marks a significant milestone in the companies' plans to expand their footprint in the Indian EV market. The partnership focuses on equipping future EVs with locally produced lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, a move that will undoubtedly enhance the competitiveness of Hyundai and Kia's electric vehicles in India.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on April 8, 2024, at Hyundai Motor Group's Namyang Research and Development Center in South Korea. This event saw the gathering of key figures from both companies, including Heui Won Yang, President and Head of R&D Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia, and Dr. Mandar V Deo, Managing Director and CEO of Exide Energy. This collaboration aims to localize EV battery production in India, a strategic move that aligns with the country's carbon neutrality goals and the growing demand for electric vehicles.
"India is a key market for vehicle electrification due in part to the government's carbon neutrality goals, which makes securing cost competitiveness through localized battery production crucial," stated Heui Won Yang during the signing ceremony. This partnership not only signals Hyundai and Kia's commitment to the Indian market but also positions them as leaders in the transition towards electric mobility.
Exide Energy Solutions Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Exide Industries Ltd., brings to the table extensive experience and leadership in the battery manufacturing sector.
