Hyundai Motor And Kia Showcase Vision For Software-Defined Factories At E-FOREST TECH DAY 2024

Hyundai Motor and Kia are set to unveil their vision for a Software-Defined Factory (SDF) at the fifth annual E-FOREST TECH DAY 2024. This event will highlight over 200 new manufacturing technologies, including Logistics Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) Navigation Control Software and Atypical Flexible Parts (HOSE) Automatic Assembly Technology. The exhibition aims to foster discussions among six Hyundai Motor Group companies and partners.

The E-FOREST smart factory brand by Hyundai Motor and Kia seeks to enhance manufacturing systems through the integration of automation technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and human-friendly smart technologies. The event will be held from October 22 to October 24 at the Hyundai Motor and Kia Uiwang Research Institute, providing a platform for sharing research and development achievements.

E-FOREST TECH DAY 2024 will showcase a variety of innovative technologies designed to lead AI-automated manufacturing. Among these are manufacturing AI, digital twins, automated logistics, assembly solutions, robotics, and advanced air mobility (AAM) manufacturing technologies. Notably, 28 of these technologies are contributed by Group companies, with five startups also participating in integrated exhibitions.

The Logistics AMR Navigation Control Software is a standout innovation that enhances logistics robots' movement capabilities. Unlike previous technologies that allowed only forward movement, this software enables movement in all directions. It allows smooth navigation around curves even when carrying heavy loads through left and right wheel rotation control.

Atypical Flexible Parts (HOSE) Automatic Assembly Technology is another significant advancement. It uses an AI vision algorithm to recognize irregular parts like hoses and wires. This technology calculates picking points automatically and issues control commands, crucial for autonomous factory operations when humanoid robots are introduced.

The Infinite Multi-Axis Holding Fixture enhances factory flexibility by allowing various parts such as doors, hoods, and wheels to be assembled using a single fixture. This reduces the cost of creating fixtures as part changes are automatically input into the PC, moving the fixture’s part fixing point accordingly.

Advanced Solutions for Safety and Precision

SPOT! Industry-Wide Solution introduces intelligent inspection technology using AI, vision processing, and big data processing for real-time safety inspections in factories. It employs various sensors equivalent to eyes, nose, and mouth for comprehensive equipment checks.

The UAM Wing to Body Automated Alignment System is designed for precise assembly of heavy UAM bodies and wings with an accuracy of 0.025 mm. This technology significantly reduces assembly time from days to just a few hours by considering UAM's need for greater precision than ground vehicles.

Facilitating Technological Exchange

Hyundai Motor and Kia have organized conferences and seminars during the event to facilitate information sharing among participants. "An estimated 9,000 participants from Hyundai Motor Group, partners, universities, and government institutes are expected," said Jae Min Lee, Vice President of E-FOREST Center at Hyundai Motor and Kia.

The focus is on discussing pioneering technologies shaping future manufacturing plants. This event marks a crucial step in incorporating these innovations into production facilities while encouraging technological exchange among Group companies and partners through open innovation exhibitions.

The E-FOREST smart factory brand aims to innovate manufacturing systems by connecting everything organically to create customer value. Automation technologies using AI and robots alongside human-friendly smart tech aim to upgrade the entire mobility industry efficiently while delivering excellence to customers.

E-FOREST is set to become a hub for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), delivering products faster through data connection and digital transformation. As SDFs establish themselves in the future, enhanced manufacturing intelligence will enable data-based decision-making with benefits like shorter production preparation periods.
