Hyundai Recalls Ioniq 5 Electric Cars in India Over Charging Unit Defect

Hyundai offers two electric car models in India: the Kona EV and the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5, being the more premium and expensive of the two, has seen limited sales. However, it has exceeded expectations by finding over 2,000 customers within one and a half years of its launch.

Recently, Hyundai has issued a recall for the Ioniq 5 due to a manufacturing defect. The defect affects all units manufactured between its launch and April this year. The issue lies with the integrated charging control unit, which is crucial for converting high-voltage electricity into a usable format for the car's battery pack.

This unit also charges the secondary battery from the main battery pack and acts as a controller when the car powers home appliances or other devices.

Problems with this unit could affect features like speakers, climate control, and the infotainment system. Hyundai is addressing this issue seriously and will replace the faulty units free of cost.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an SUV-style electric car equipped with a 72.6 kWh battery pack. It boasts an ARAI-certified range of up to 631 km on a single charge.

The car's electric motor produces 214.5 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque, allowing it to reach a top speed of 185 kmph and accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 7.6 seconds.

The Ioniq 5 supports fast charging capabilities. Using a 350 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes.

With a 50 kW DC charging point, it takes around 57 minutes to achieve the same charge level. Home charging with an 11 kW charger takes approximately 6 hours and 55 minutes for a full charge.

DriveSpark Thinks

The Ioniq 5 is priced from Rs 46.05 lakh onwards (ex-showroom). Its high price tag makes it a niche product in India. Despite this, it has managed to garner significant interest among consumers, although the recent recall may cause some disappointment among owners.

Hyundai's proactive approach in addressing the defect demonstrates their commitment to customer satisfaction and safety. By replacing the faulty integrated charging control units at no cost, they aim to maintain consumer trust and ensure the smooth functioning of their electric vehicles.
