Hyundai Hope On Wheels Announces Global Expansion And New Initiatives To Support Pediatric Cancer Research

Hyundai Hope On Wheels marked its 26th anniversary with a gala in Washington, D.C., celebrating a $26 million commitment and reaching a lifetime donation total of $250 million. The event, attended by Hyundai leaders and congressional members, highlighted the foundation's role in advancing pediatric cancer research. The theme 'Hope Lights the Way' underscored the impact of funded research on innovative treatments for young cancer patients.

The foundation announced plans to expand globally in 2025, extending its reach to countries like Canada and Mexico. This move aims to broaden its support for childhood cancer research worldwide. Hyundai Hope On Wheels also introduced a new survivorship initiative, committing over $5 million to help cancer survivors lead healthier lives. Hyundai Hope On Wheels has established an Endowed Chair of Pediatric Oncology grant worth $3 million. This grant ensures ongoing research at leading medical institutions, with Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center receiving the inaugural award. Additionally, the foundation hosted its third Survivorship Summit in Washington, D.C., focusing on the needs of children during and after cancer treatment.

Dr. Dan Wechsler from the Hyundai Hope On Wheels Medical Advisory Committee stated, "As the survival rate for young cancer patients increases, so does the need to ensure that they live well and thrive after cancer treatment." He commended Hyundai's dedication to improving life quality for pediatric cancer patients through comprehensive support.

A recent impact assessment by Hyundai Hope On Wheels highlighted significant achievements in pediatric cancer research. The foundation's funding has led to improved outcomes for children with leukemia and advances in brain tumor research. It has also supported new national imaging guidelines and developments in treatments and immunotherapies.

This year’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month events included a congressional reception at the Rayburn House Office Building. Ceremonial check presentations were held at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Center and Children’s National Hospital, both recipients of this year's grants.

Commitment to Research Funding

The foundation awarded $26 million in annual research grants for 2024, supporting 91 institutions nationwide focused on enhancing treatments for children with cancer. Many grants were presented during Hyundai Hope On Wheels Handprint Ceremonies across the country. These efforts underscore Hyundai's commitment to finding a cure for childhood cancer through extensive funding and support.

Since its inception in 1998, Hyundai Hope On Wheels has become one of the largest nonprofit funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S., providing over 1,300 grants to more than 175 hospitals and research institutions. Primary funding comes from Hyundai Motor America and its network of over 835 U.S. dealers.
