Hyundai's New Initiative EcoGram Cuts Down Carbon Emissions Significantly

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) has launched EcoGram in Gurugram, Haryana. This environmentally friendly project, which comprises a Biogas plant and material recovery facility, has been operational since October 2022.

The initiative is notable for its contribution to reducing carbon emissions, having saved 1.4 million kg of CO2 emissions by processing waste from over 2000 households and the Hyundai Motor India Headquarters in Gurugram.

With an investment of Rs. 2.13 crore, EcoGram stands as a beacon of sustainable waste management. The facility boasts an annual electricity generation capacity of 76 megawatts and is currently self-sustaining. There are plans to supply electricity to the grid shortly, showcasing a successful model of converting waste to energy.

Mr. Puneet Anand, AVP & Vertical Head – Corporate Affairs at Hyundai Motor India Limited, highlighted the project's impact.

He stated, "EcoGram is an initiative towards sustainable management of waste in metropolitan cities. We have saved a considerable amount of waste from ending up in landfills, curbing 1.4 million kg of CO2 emissions." He further emphasized the project's role in setting a benchmark for sustainable waste management in cities.

EcoGram Biogas Plant & Material Recovery Facility

Located in Gurugram, the facility processes both wet and dry waste. The wet waste is converted into Biogas, which is then used for electricity production, while the dry waste is segregated for recycling.

Daily, the plant can handle 2,000 kg of wet waste and 5,000 kg of dry waste, demonstrating a robust capacity for managing urban waste efficiently.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Since its inception, EcoGram has made significant strides in reducing the carbon footprint by processing large volumes of household waste. This initiative has directly contributed to mitigating the environmental impact of landfills by significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

Electricity Generation

The facility's capability to produce 200 kilowatts of electricity daily underscores its potential in the field of renewable energy. So far, it has generated 40 megawatts of electricity from processed biogas, illustrating the viability of waste-to-energy projects in urban settings.

Operational Support

The Metropolitan Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) collaborates with EcoGram, ensuring the facility receives its waste from three Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs), encompassing over 2000 households. This partnership facilitates the smooth collection and processing of waste, emphasizing community involvement in sustainable practices.

DriveSpark Thinks

Established in 2006, HMIF has been at the forefront of corporate social responsibility, focusing on community development, healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, road safety, and more.

The foundation has launched several initiatives aimed at creating shared values and promoting inclusive growth, reflecting Hyundai's vision of 'Progress for Humanity’.

From healthcare programs in rural areas to employment initiatives for the youth, and from road safety campaigns to educational support during the COVID pandemic, HMIF continues to dedicate its efforts towards the betterment of society. With projects like EcoGram, HMIF is paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
