Hyundai Donates $50,000 To UCI Health To Enhance Diabetes Support Services In California
Hyundai Motor America has contributed $50,000 to UCI Health to enhance diabetes care at its Family Health Centers in Santa Ana and Anaheim, California. This funding will establish a dedicated diabetic exam room and initiate a peer education series. The initiative is part of Hyundai Hope, which focuses on community health and safety.
The donation will transform an existing exam room into a specialised diabetes suite. This new facility will feature an EIDON color confocal scanner, a high-resolution eye camera for early detection of diabetic eye disease. The aim is to prevent vision loss by identifying issues before symptoms appear.
Additionally, the funding supports group medical visits for diabetes patients. These 8-week courses will be led by UCI Health's interdisciplinary team, including physicians and dieticians. Sessions will cover topics like healthy habits, insulin resistance, and stress management tools.
Dr. José Mayorga of UCI Health Family Health Center expressed gratitude for Hyundai's support. He highlighted that many patients live below the poverty line and primarily speak Spanish. The center has served the community since 1978, addressing not only medical but also dental, social, and behavioral health needs.
UCI Health is a major academic health system in California, affiliated with the University of California, Irvine. It includes the UCI Medical Center in Orange and several other facilities across the region. The system serves nearly 4 million people in Orange County and surrounding areas.
