Hyundai Casper: An Upcoming New Contender In India's Compact SUV Market
Hyundai is set to expand its SUV lineup in India with the addition of the Casper, a crossover that aims to blend the compactness and agility of a city car with the robust styling of an SUV.
This move comes as Hyundai looks to cater to the growing demand for vehicles with a stronger street presence, a segment currently dominated by models like the Tata Punch. The Hyundai Casper, with its eye-catching design, could be a game-changer in this competitive market.
The Casper, riding on the K1 platform—shared with the likes of Grand i10 Nios and Santro—showcases Hyundai's strategy to offer a diverse range of options to its customers. This platform's versatility is evident in the varying designs and functionalities of the cars it underpins, including the Exter SUV, and Hyundai's current offering against the Tata Punch.
While Hyundai trademarked the Casper name on 13th May 2024, there hasn't been an official announcement about its launch in India. This move, often a precaution to protect the brand name, hints at Hyundai's consideration of the Indian market's preferences, which lean towards dynamic and stylish vehicles.
Casper's Design & Features
The Casper stands out with its unique design, featuring circular headlamps, LED DRLs, and a striking mesh grille. Its dimensions make it ideal for city driving, being 3,595 mm long, 1,595 mm wide, and 1,575 mm tall. The compact SUV also boasts a wheelbase of 2,400 mm, promising a spacious interior despite its small footprint.

While the international versions come with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), the Indian model might skip these features to keep the price competitive.

In terms of performance, the Casper is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine in India, with options for both manual and AMT gearboxes. This setup aims to offer an efficient and responsive driving experience, suitable for both city streets and highways.
