Hyundai Canada Recognised As Leading DEI Employer For Second Year

Hyundai Canada has been recognised by Canadian HR Reporter (CHRR) as a Five-Star Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Employer for 2024. This marks the second consecutive year Hyundai Canada has received this accolade, highlighting its ongoing commitment to effective and sustainable diversity programs.

"Building an inclusive and equitable workplace is a collective effort of team members from all levels. The active listening to each diverse group and looking at ways to ensure we have a business environment that is safe and helps them thrive is not just the work of policies and benefits, but the active participation of managers and co-workers on a daily basis," says Kirk Merrett, director of human resources and administration at Hyundai Canada. "Thank you to CHRR for this recognition. I am grateful to work with a leadership team that supports DEI initiatives as an integral part of our successful business model. We are also fortunate to have many partners in Canada that champion and guide us."

Hyundai Canada Leads in DEI

Hyundai Canada extends its diversity efforts through educational bursaries and programs aimed at underrepresented communities. These initiatives help secure a broader talent pool for the automotive industry, ensuring inclusivity from the ground up.

The recognition by CHRR underscores the pivotal role played by Hyundai Canada's human resources team in crafting policies that foster success for all employees. This accolade was awarded after an exhaustive research study conducted by Canadian HR Reporter, which identified top performers in the industry.

The selection process involved interviews with industry professionals and extensive research reflecting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices criteria. Chris Sweeney, managing editor for special reports at Canadian HR Reporter, noted, "It was inspirational to learn about the initiatives and programs the nationwide nominees have implemented. Hyundai Auto Canada’s team was recognized for their commitment and steadfast belief in promoting diversity and inclusion, and for ensuring their employees are part of a culture which values them all."

Hyundai Canada's internal education initiatives aim to dismantle stigmas while fostering an inclusive culture where every team member feels supported. These policies contribute significantly to Hyundai Canada's success both internally and externally.

Employee Support Systems

The company has enhanced benefits to support mental wellness, gender affirmation, surrogacy coverage, parental leave top-up, and even 24/7 online veterinary care for pet owners. Recently, Hyundai's HR team partnered with Diversio to provide training opportunities focused on inclusive hiring practices.

Moreover, new hires undergo mandatory DEI training along with multiple Subject Matter Expert Sessions throughout the year. These sessions aim to deepen understanding of true diversity across professional, mental, physical, and psychological spheres.

Leadership Support

Hyundai Canada's Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are praised for their innovative initiatives backed by full leadership support. This backing ensures these initiatives are successfully implemented across the organisation.

The company's efforts extend beyond internal policies; they actively engage in creating more inclusive environments within the automotive industry through grassroots education bursaries and academic programs targeting underrepresented groups.

Established in 1983 in Markham, Ontario, Hyundai Auto Canada was the first subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company outside Korea. With over 250 dealerships across Canada today, Hyundai offers a technology-rich lineup of cars, SUVs, and electrified vehicles.

The company has also been named one of the Top 50 Best Workplaces™ in Canada for seven consecutive years by the Great Place to Work® Institute.

This recognition from CHRR highlights Hyundai Canada's dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace where every employee can thrive. Their comprehensive approach ensures that diversity is not just a policy but an integral part of their corporate culture.
