Hyundai Sets Sights On IMPC Championship Lead With Upcoming Road America Race
Hyundai Motor America (HMA) is poised to take the lead in the 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (IMPC) championship. With only four rounds left, Hyundai trails by just 20 points in the Manufacturer’s Championship standings. Their consistent performance has seen them secure podium finishes at every race this season.
The seventh round of the IMPC will be held on Saturday, August 3, at Road America. The race will start at 2:45 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on Peacock. This event is crucial for Hyundai as they aim to close the gap and potentially take the top spot in the championship.
Hyundai's Elantra N TCR has demonstrated impressive speed all year. In their last race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Robert Wickens and Harry Gottsacker secured first place in the No. 33 car, while Preston Brown and Denis Dupont finished third in the No. 76 entry. These results have been vital for Hyundai's championship aspirations.
Despite their strong overall performance, Road America has historically been a challenging track for Hyundai. The team has not won at this venue since Mark Wilkins and Mason Filippi's victory in 2019. However, recent podium finishes by Wickens and Gottsacker offer hope for a breakthrough win this weekend.
This year, Hyundai Hope On Wheels has committed to donating $100 for every lap led by a Hyundai Elantra N TCR during each race of the 2024 IMSA IMPC season. So far, over $15,000 has been raised to support childhood cancer research through this initiative.
The current championship standings show Preston Brown and Denis Dupont in second place with 1780 points, followed closely by Harry Gottsacker and Robert Wickens with 1740 points. Other notable positions include Mason Filippi and Mark Wilkins in fourth place with 1590 points.
