Hyundai Secures Impressive 1-2 Finish At Indianapolis Motor Speedway 120 Race
Hyundai has strengthened its lead in the 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Championship Manufacturers’ Championship. This follows a remarkable one-two finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Mason Filippi and Mark Wilkins secured their first win of the season in the No. 98 Hyundai Elantra N TCR. Their victory at the Battle on the Bricks marks Hyundai's third win this season.
Drivers Harry Gottsacker and Robert Wickens finished second in the No. 33 car, completing Hyundai's impressive performance at Indianapolis. Bosch introduced a new hand control system for Robert Wickens, enhancing brake application consistency and safety diagnostics. The updated system reduces friction, allowing Wickens to use his own strength more effectively when braking.
The No. 98 car faced challenges during qualifying due to a red flag, starting from the back of the TCR grid. Despite this, Mark Wilkins quickly advanced through the field, eventually leading after a strategic decision during a caution period. Mason Filippi took over for the final stint, maintaining and extending their lead despite fuel concerns.
Filippi managed to conserve fuel effectively, securing their first victory of the 2024 IMPC campaign after 30 minutes of careful driving. Meanwhile, Gottsacker and Wickens also started from a challenging position but made significant progress using a similar strategy as their teammates.
Gottsacker's strong opening stint kept them competitive, though a lengthy pit stop posed challenges. Wickens recovered quickly with fast lap times, managing fuel efficiently to secure second place and narrow their championship gap to just 150 points behind first place.
Bryson Morris and Taylor Hagler faced an uphill battle starting near last in the No. 77 car. Hagler showed strong pace initially before Morris took over, ultimately finishing fourth after an additional pit stop for fuel.
Other Team Performances
Morgan Burkhard and Tyler Gonzalez led several laps in the No. 99 car but dropped to tenth after contact later in the race. Preston Brown and Denis Dupont's day ended early due to an incident despite being top qualifiers among Hyundai teams.
Hyundai now leads the Manufacturers’ Championship by 90 points heading into the final round at Road Atlanta on October 11, 2024. The upcoming Fox Factory 120 will be crucial for maintaining their lead.
Hyundai's Broader Impact
In addition to racing success, Hyundai raised $6,700 for Hyundai Hope On Wheels by leading 67 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This initiative donates $100 per lap led by a Hyundai Elantra N TCR throughout the season.
Hyundai Motor America supports U.S consumers with a diverse range of vehicles while contributing significantly to the economy through its operations and dealerships across America.
