Essential Guide To Making A 999 Call During Roadside Emergencies

GEM Motoring Assist has launched a new video to guide motorists on making a 999 call from the roadside. This video is part of GEM’s Blue Light Aware road safety resources, aimed at educating drivers on emergency protocols.

James Luckhurst, GEM's road safety adviser, highlighted the importance of providing accurate information during a 999 call. "A road collision or incident can be stressful and confusing. Knowing what information to give to the police emergency operator means you’re doing your bit to get help on its way as soon as possible," he said. The video details the initial information required, such as the incident location, number of vehicles involved, casualty details, and whether anyone is trapped.

A second video offers advice on assisting emergency motorcycles. Sgt Dave Bottomley from the Metropolitan Police’s motorcycle safety team explained their advantages in emergencies. "They can often reach casualties quickly in heavy traffic where cars or ambulances may struggle," he noted. The video advises drivers to slow down and take appropriate steps to help motorcycles pass safely without breaking traffic rules.

Safety for Horse Riders

The third video provides safety tips for horse riders when an emergency vehicle approaches. Produced with the British Horse Society, it features Alan Hiscox, the society’s safety director. "Emergency drivers will always plan to cancel their sirens when they spot horses and riders on the road ahead," Hiscox stated. He also recommended wearing high-visibility gear for better visibility.
