HORSE Powertrain Solutions Launches Production Of New Plug-In Hybrid Engine At Valladolid Facility
HORSE Powertrain Solutions has commenced production of a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine at its Valladolid plant. This engine, designed for plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs), will initially be produced at a rate of 1,200 units monthly. The investment in this new production line totals €4 million and is expected to create 345 jobs.
The HR12 engine, which delivers a peak power of 110kW (152PS) and torque of 230Nm, will first be used in the Renault Rafale E-Tech Hybrid. HORSE aims to eventually increase production capacity to 6,875 engines per month. Development for this PHEV variant began in July 2021, with significant investments made to enhance the Valladolid facility's assembly line.
The complete powertrain unit includes three electric motors: two main motors and one secondary motor. The front axle motor provides 50kW and 205Nm, while the rear axle motor offers 100kW and 195Nm. A secondary high-voltage starter generator motor adds another 25kW and 50Nm. Together, these components deliver over 220kW (300hp) through a clutchless multi-mode gearbox.
The energy for this system is stored in a 400-volt lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 22kWh. This setup allows the Rafale E-Tech Hybrid to achieve a pure-electric range exceeding 100km. In electric mode, it boasts an average fuel consumption of just 0.7 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of only 15g/km.
