HORSE Expands Powertrain Testing Services In Brazil To Support Third-Party Manufacturers

HORSE has opened its Curitiba plant in Brazil to third-party automotive manufacturers, offering advanced engine and emissions testing services. This facility, unique in South America, provides comprehensive powertrain calibration, durability, and emissions testing. It can conduct nearly 12,000 hours of testing annually. Engineers can assess powertrains both in labs and real-world settings. HORSE is a division of HORSE Powertrain Limited, a leader in hybrid and combustion powertrain solutions.

The Curitiba plant features cutting-edge technology for local development and homologation of powertrains. It includes three engine test benches for base engine calibration, operating two shifts with a combined capacity of 6,500 hours annually. Despite its altitude of 920 metres, the facility uses a pressurised chamber to simulate conditions from sea level upwards. Extensive test tracks allow evaluations under varied driving conditions.

The facility also boasts a chassis dynamometer bench for emission calibration and homologation, capable of 4,500 hours of testing yearly on a four-shift cycle. A chemical lab analyses aldehyde emissions from ethanol fuel used widely in the region. The facility adheres to ISO 17025 standards for testing and calibration laboratories.

A vehicle evaporative test chamber enables complete detection and elimination of fuel vapour from development powertrains. This chamber accommodates entire vehicles for comprehensive fuel system evaluation. CO2 testing is conducted both in labs and on-road using a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS), ensuring compliance with Real Driving Emissions (RDE) standards.

João Dias, Head of R&D Center at HORSE Brazil, stated: "The Brazilian market has one of most rigorous criteria for testing emissions and fuel consumption in the world, including evaporative tests. We’re proud to now offer the market testing solutions that meet these standards, guaranteeing high quality and sustainable mobility."

HORSE was established to deliver efficient low-emission engines and technologies globally. With eight production plants across seven countries and three R&D centres, it produces 3.2 million units annually. The company is headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

HORSE Powertrain Limited is headquartered in London with 19,000 employees worldwide across 17 plants and five R&D centres. Established on May 31, 2024, Renault Group and Geely each hold a 45% stake while Aramco holds 10%. HORSE employs over 9,000 people across seven countries.

Wesley Palma, Plant Director at HORSE Curitiba said: "It is hugely exciting to be opening the doors to our state-of-the-art testing facility in Curitiba. Featuring the latest engine dynamometers, emissions laboratories, homologation facilities and a team of dedicated engineers and technicians, this leading site provides a valuable resource for our clients across the region."

HORSE believes there isn't a single solution for sustainable mobility; hence it invests in diverse technologies supporting automotive industries' transition to sustainability. It develops efficient full-hybrid systems alongside internal combustion powertrains.

The Curitiba plant's opening marks an important step towards providing tailored solutions for South American markets' specific demands through innovative testing capabilities that ensure high-quality standards are met efficiently.
