Honda Marks A Decade Of Innovation At Technical Development Center And Heritage Museum Anniversary

Honda marked a decade of success for two significant facilities within its Heritage Center in Ohio. The Technical Development Center (TDC) and the Heritage Center Museum celebrated their 10th anniversary. These facilities have played a crucial role in advancing manufacturing skills and showcasing Honda's history in North America over the past 65 years.

The Honda Heritage Center, located near the Marysville Auto Plant, opened in November 2014. This $35 million, 160,000-square-foot facility includes a museum, the TDC, and office spaces supporting Honda's North American operations. The anniversary was commemorated with an open house event attended by Honda leaders, associates, and special guests.

Honda Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation

The TDC is pivotal in providing technical education to Honda production associates. It offers courses that enhance a wide range of manufacturing skills. This center leads technical education programs for U.S.-based manufacturing plants, ensuring equipment reliability and skill enhancement through over 200 courses covering various technical topics.

"Reflecting our strong focus on workforce development, the team at the Honda Technical Development Center continues to evolve our training programs to keep our associates abreast of the latest technologies as new equipment is introduced into our manufacturing facilities," said TDC leader Aaron Suchland.

Since its inception at the HHC, the TDC has expanded to new locations in Ohio, Alabama, and Indiana. These expansions support Honda associates across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Annually, about 3,000 associates benefit from these classes. Additionally, students and community groups are hosted to promote workforce activities and demonstrate manufacturing technologies.

The TDC adapts its offerings to include new technologies like electric vehicles (EVs). This flexibility supports Honda's approach to producing petrol, hybrid, and all-electric vehicles for customers. The center combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences to ensure comprehensive training.

Honda's Manufacturing Legacy

Honda began automobile production in America over 40 years ago at the Marysville Auto Plant in November 1982. In 2023, 70% of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S. were manufactured domestically using both local and global parts. Cumulative auto production in America has surpassed 30 million vehicles.

Bob Nelson, executive vice president at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., stated: "The Honda Heritage Center Museum tracks our history of more than six decades in America, including over 45 years of U.S. manufacturing." The museum will reopen five days a week starting November 21 after limited hours during the pandemic.

Investment and Economic Impact

Honda established its first U.S. manufacturing operations in Marysville, Ohio, with motorcycle production beginning in 1979. Today, nearly 23,000 U.S. associates support operations across 12 manufacturing plants with an annual capacity exceeding one million automobiles among other products.

The company has invested over $19 billion into its U.S. operations since inception; nearly $2.4 billion was invested over just the past five years alone. Additionally, Honda collaborates with 620 original equipment suppliers within America with parts purchases exceeding $520 billion since 1979.

The museum features more than 70 displays highlighting historic products alongside future concepts through interactive exhibits that showcase significant milestones achieved by Honda throughout North America's rich history.
