Honda Prelude Hybrid-Electric Sports Coupe To Make U.S. Debut In Late 2025

Honda is set to reintroduce the Prelude, a name cherished by car enthusiasts, as a hybrid-electric sports coupe in the U.S. market by late next year. This new model will feature the innovative Honda S+ Shift, enhancing driver engagement through advanced Linear Shift Control. The Prelude's return highlights Honda's dedication to offering exciting products that cater to customer needs.

The Prelude was first launched in November 1978 and has been popular for its sporty design and performance. It has consistently brought new technologies to the automotive industry over its five generations. Notable features included four-wheel steering and the Active Torque Transfer System.

Honda aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, with plans for all vehicle sales to be battery-electric or fuel cell electric by 2040. Hybrid-electric vehicles are crucial in this transition, with Honda celebrating 25 years of hybrid sales in America this month. The Prelude's hybrid powertrain aligns with this strategy.

In 2024, Honda achieved record electrified vehicle sales, making up over a quarter of total sales. Hybrid trims account for more than half of Accord and CR-V sales, while the Civic hybrid is expected to reach about 40% of Civic sales. Cumulative electrified vehicle sales have surpassed one million units.

This year marked the debut of the Honda Prologue, an all-electric SUV. Production of EVs based on a new platform will begin at the Honda EV Hub in Ohio late next year. At CES 2024, Honda showcased two concept models from the Honda 0 Series: the Saloon and Space-Hub.

A production version of the Saloon is planned for 2026 as a flagship model of the series. By 2030, seven models from the Honda 0 Series will be introduced globally, including various sizes. A new model will be unveiled at CES 2025, embodying technologies from the recent Honda 0 Tech Meeting.

Honda's Current Lineup

Honda offers a diverse range of vehicles through over 1,000 U.S. dealers. The lineup includes popular models like Civic and Accord, along with SUVs such as HR-V and CR-V. The electrified lineup features all-electric Prologue SUV and hybrid versions of Accord, CR-V, and Civic.

The company has been manufacturing cars in America for over four decades with 18 major facilities in North America. In 2023, nearly all Hondas sold in the U.S. were made in North America using both domestic and global parts.

The Prelude Concept made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show after being unveiled at Japan Mobility Show earlier this year. Jessika Laudermilk from Honda Auto Sales stated: "The return of the Honda Prelude as a hybrid-electric sports model demonstrates our continued commitment to offer a variety of exhilarating products to meet the needs of our customers."
