Honda Commemorates 40 Years In North Carolina With New Investments And Electrified Vision

Honda has announced plans to produce electric powersports and power equipment products globally from its North Carolina facility. This move follows a $21.5 million investment in weld and paint operations at the Swepsonville plant, completing the transition of ATV production to North Carolina. Honda North Carolina Manufacturing (NCM) is now the exclusive home for Honda ATV production in North America.

Mark Kohls, vice president of Honda Powersports and Products at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., stated, "Our decision to make North Carolina the home for Honda ATVs today and our electrified powersports and power equipment products of tomorrow is based on the 40-year commitment of Honda associates in the Tar Heel State to build quality Honda products for our customers."

NCM celebrated 40 years of production with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new weld and paint operations. Kazuhiro Takizawa, president & CEO, and Bob Nelson, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., joined NCM associates and guests at the event. This marks NCM as the first Honda facility in North America to manufacture future electrified powersports and power equipment products.

The transition also means that all ATV production has moved from Honda South Carolina Manufacturing (SCM) in Timmonsville to NCM. SCM will now focus solely on producing Honda side-by-side vehicles. Last year, SCM expanded its side-by-side model production and celebrated 25 years of operation.

NCM began producing power equipment in North Carolina on August 6, 1984, starting with lawnmowers. Over the years, they added snow blowers, string trimmers, mini-tillers, water pumps, generators, and general-purpose engines to their lineup. In 2023, ATVs were included in their production range, marking a new era for the facility.

Lynne Hedrick, site lead at NCM, expressed excitement about future manufacturing prospects: "With complete ATV production capabilities now operational, we're excited about the future of Honda powersports manufacturing in Swepsonville."

Community Engagement

As part of its community support efforts, NCM has contributed over $1.15 million this year to local programs through Honda USA Foundation. This includes support for education and environmental programs at The Foundation for North Carolina A&T State University and Triangle Bikeworks' Youth Biking for Environment Sustainability program.

During their anniversary week, NCM associates will host an onsite snack pack and school kit packing event benefiting the Salvation Army.

Facility Overview

The nearly 650,000-square-foot NCM facility employs 600 associates and represents a capital investment exceeding $416.5 million. It is one of 12 major Honda production facilities in the U.S., producing outdoor power equipment products for both commercial and residential use with parts sourced domestically and globally.

Many products built at NCM were researched and developed by engineers at Honda R&D in nearby Haw River, N.C.

Honda Powersports Legacy

Honda began selling motorcycles in America in 1959. Today, it offers a wide range of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, and side-by-sides in the U.S., showcasing innovative engine and chassis designs that have set industry standards for over 65 years.

All Honda side-by-sides and ATVs are currently made at manufacturing plants in Timmonsville, S.C., and Swepsonville, N.C., using both domestic and globally sourced parts.

This strategic move solidifies North Carolina's role as a key player in Honda's future electrified product lineup while continuing its legacy of high-quality manufacturing.
