Honda Elevate Achieves Global Success: Company To Expand India-Made Car Range
Honda's Elevate, an SUV produced in India, has gained significant traction in global markets. This model is one of the most exported cars from India, reflecting the increasing acceptance of Indian-made products worldwide.
In light of this success, Honda plans to manufacture a new car model for international markets in India. The company has developed a 'PF2' platform for this purpose.
This platform will support the production of both small and medium-sized cars. Additionally, it is designed to accommodate electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Honda aims to launch small electric cars using the PF2 platform soon. The platform will also be used to produce hybrid vehicles alongside electric ones.

Models such as Sedans and SUVs are expected to be manufactured through this platform. This initiative is part of Honda's strategy to enhance its future car models and revive its declining sales in India.
The PF2 platform is a versatile foundation for manufacturing vehicles with various powertrains. Reports suggest that the first vehicle on this platform will debut in 2027.
This initial model is expected to be an SUV with three-row seating, first launching in India before being marketed globally. Although details are not confirmed, a 1.5-liter engine and hybrid option are anticipated for this vehicle.
Honda's sales have seen a downturn recently. The Honda City, once a top seller, now sells fewer than a thousand units monthly.
Similarly, the Elevate SUV's sales have dropped from over 4,500 units per month to around 2,000 units. Despite this, the Elevate model has been well-received in Japan, where it is sold as the WR-V.
Honda plans to offer multiple powertrain options similar to Toyota to strengthen its global market presence. Production for these new models is expected to start soon.
The company has also announced its goal to sell only electric vehicles by 2040, indicating a cautious but clear direction towards electrification.
The PF2 platform's flexibility allows Honda to manufacture various car models under one system. This approach aims to rejuvenate Honda's presence in the Indian market. However, it remains to be seen what challenges Honda will face in implementing this strategy.
In addition to the upcoming SUV model, Honda is expected to use the PF2 platform for the next generation of the Honda City car after the SUV's launch. This vehicle will likely be available not only in India but also in countries like Japan and Thailand.
The introduction of several new car models under the PF2 platform could help Honda regain its foothold in the Indian market. However, it will be interesting to observe how Honda navigates potential challenges ahead.
